Well I just read the whole thread. Had sr5 since 96, first was a teal 95 that I adored, played it so much the pickup failed. Anywho not found the same sound since until I played a natural special in gc. Real impressed with the updates! So light! I have a 93 5 in see thru red that I love but I will be ordering an aqua Hh5 ASAP! That’s the one the mrs likes most tooo! Can’t wait.

Yessir. It's a beaut. Plays well too. The fine folks in San Luis Obispo did a nice job for sure!
You’re gonna love it. EBMM knocked it out of the park. I typically use a lot of effects and I’m not gonna change that but I played straight to amp today with my band and this bass just keeps surprising me. It’s still the best guitar I’ve ever owned.

Just started learning a drop C tune, my first - Face To The Floor by Chevelle. I’ve never been in a band that played anything that heavy, but have seen the band and love heavy music, so down tuned mine and dug in. Yup, notes just jump off this thing with fresh strings, it now has a dedicated purpose. The band I’m auditioning for Fri do several other tunes in drop C.
That's a great tune! We used to do it and I always looked forward to it. I'm trying to get it back into the rotation. Good luck with the audition!

Although position 5 can indeed resemble an EB-0 or similar tone, I find that with the right EQ that position almost, but not quite, emulates my P Bass when in the mix. I find that position 4 sounds more like a P with a J bridge pickup mixed in.
What's your EQ at when you get that P sound?

So where is the best place to buy new from? Best setup etc..? I’m def not buying from gc. I got an acoustic from Sweetwater that came through nice...

Same. I found #5 to closer resemble the tone of my Fender P5 than any other positions.
EDIT: This was using a pre-Special SR5-HH, not one of the new Specials.

Sweetwater is certainly a good choice, and I always look there first. But, I bought both my SR5S and my 30th Anniversary SR5 from Sam Ash online and they arrived in perfectly setup condition. Sam Ash had photos of the actual bass and weights listed, too.

Gets me that Ready Freddy Washington Forget Me Nots slap tone.
Flat and palm muting gets me that Pino, Jamerson thump. Emulates flats.
If I want a great muted pick tone ala Carol Kaye I boost the trebles slightly.
Now that I think about it, I guess I can see where position 5 or (1st gear as I like to call it) could work for that wide open 70’s Pbass tone. I’d probably have to roll back the bass some and slightly boost mids and treble . Hmmm I’ll try it.

Interesting question.
EBMM has recommended set-up specs for their instruments, in the relevant FAQ section of their website.
Differences in temperature / humidity, between when the instrument was completed and setup at the factory in Obispo, and the store you buy it from, would account for any changes in neck relief.
Otherwise, any store that doesn't monkey with the factory setup, or discard the case / case candy, ought to be a safe bet.
I'm not in the U.S. but I had a feeling Musicians Friend, or maybe Sweetwater, offered a significant discount for new customers signing up for an account / news letter, as well as other coupons etc that can all be used together, coupled with already good prices.
