EBMM StingRay Special Club

Ernie Ball sells two types of knobs as spare parts :
- the Stingray bass knob
- the Stingray Special bass knob

But they do not specify weight.
I assume the Special knobs would be lighter... but can anyone with a Special please weight a knob ?
The standard knobs are super heavy and changing 4 of them is a ~100g weight saving.

On another note.... I was messing around with my 5HH today using the secret setting in between 4 & 5. I was getting some very nice Motown thump with the lows and mids slightly boosted and trebles backed off just tad.

For some reason I am also enjoying position 3 more . I much prefer it to position 2 . It is so rich and full.
I forgot about the secret settings. I will have to explore that again.

My Special is a 4-string HH. I also like position 3 a lot. Especially if I'm playing more ballad type songs, or country. If I had to pick two favorites, it would be 3 and 4 (but I enjoy all of them at times).

The first time I played my Special HH with one of the trios I jam with, they went nuts. They LOVED the tone. The main singer/lead guitarist even said (jokingly, I think), "Every time we get together, you HAVE to play THAT bass! And don't change the settings!!" It was on position 3 at the time. It was the most gushing I've ever gotten from guitarists about a particular bass. Yeah, they'll often comment something like, "That bass sounds really good" or something. But this was much more specific.

Only "problem" is that I have a lot of really nice basses. (First-World problem, for sure!) So I rotate them as much as possible.

I kind of find Position 2 and Position 3 similar, but different. Position 2 sounds kind of Jazz like to me and that's how I typically use it. Position 3 does also, but beefier and with less Jazz bass honk. I like it on our slower songs and ballads but I'll sometimes boost the mids and use it louder/heavier songs. It's pretty versatile depending on how you EQ it.

Interesting to hear how your preferences have changed. Mine have, too, as I've said here a few times. Position #4 has always been my favorite on all three SR5HH's I've owned, but the other four seem to change preference order pretty regularly. I mostly attribute that constsant change to occassionally finding new uses for specific settings or simply rediscovering a setting I haven't used much in a while.

Bottom line is that I just like 'em all. :bassist:

I keep forgetting to explore the "Secret settings" as well. I often slightly boost the bass and mids and slightly lower the treble, especially in Position #4, so that 4/5 setting sounds like it could work very well for me.

Great color and your pics did a nice job showing it off. :woot:

Is that also an ebony fretboard? Even if it's just a relatively dark rosewood, it looks great with the black hardware.
