Is it wrong to think of position 4 on a Stingray as basically a 60’s jazz bass, but on steroids?

Yes and also it can remind me a bit of a ThunderBird if I eq it just right and pick with some authority. My HH is able to get some nice growl that I can't get with the H. Some people might not need both models, but I enjoy the differences between the 2.

Im still considering having my Old Smoothie refinished in Tiffany Blue. Part of me thinks I might miss the Chocolate burst because it looks so old school cool. But that Tiffanys Blue has been calling byname for a long time. I do like to be different.

Any suggestions other than just buy another bass? I really dont need or want any more. Can't believe I just said that.

I think the tiffany blue would be a gorgeous color to have on a bass so I'd say go for it.

That said I remember that limited edition purple sparkle Stingray special that someone around here got refinished in...black...everyone does what he want with his stuff but it was such a bummer for me, I wanted to scream just get a black bass!

So..I'd still say get another beat up Stingray Special to do the Tiffany blue thing

The only negative I can give you is that the Old Smootie isn't a basic, standard, run-of-the-mill Stingray (in some ways it is, but ...), it's its own thing, so refinishing it like that might devalue it on the market. But, if you really have no plans to ever sell it, then what's the harm?

On the other hand, if you ever do sell it, for the rest of its life it will be known as your bass, with proof easily traced back to the Talkbass threads and posts it will spawn, because who is more likely to refinish a Stingray in Tiffany Blue than YOU?!

What about this idea ... Tiffany Blue Sparkle? On one hand, what could be more you? But, on the other hand, Tiffany Blue is also its own thing, so would a sparkle version be not quite the same (not as good as?) the classic, trademarked (yes, it's now trademarked) Tiffany Blue? Curious to hear your thoughts on that.

I’ve really been digging position 1 on my 5HH just the neck pickup sounds fantastic

Position 1 is great. If I play right over/behind the neck I get kind of a wooly/upright'ish tone out of it.

Played the new 5HH on two gigs this week... I know this may sound strange but I am using position 4 more than the classic Ray/bridge thing. Is that normal? For anyone? I still use that (and to a lesser extent, the others), but I really love the position 4 because it's so damn meaty. Just think it's funny I got this because I love the Ray sound so much and wanted more, too, but I'm really diggin' the 'more'.

I used position 4 last night on a recording session. It's a meatier jazz bass tone. I dig it. The producer loved it. I used position 2 on a different recording session with him a few weeks back (more of a P bass tone). I brought 3 basses last night but he said "lets start with the bass you used last (which was the Stingray)". I told him, I had a new P bass and would like to give it a shot. We ran a sample recording with it and then moved to the Stingray. I ran through all the positions on the Ray and he loved position 4 for the track last night. Love the bass. Lot's of versatility!

Good question just to make sure. Musicman starts at the bridge, so bridge position is 1 and neck is 5.

You'll get no argument from me about Position 4, inner coils. That's been my favorite since getting my first Stingray 5HH in 2007! I do use all five switch positions on almost every gig and my order of preference will change from time to time. But what hasn't changed yet is that Position 4 is my favorite.

Can't say that will never change, but it hasn't yet.

I actually used position 5 more than usual at rehearsal last night. Sounded great!

Great question. I forgot what the Ernie Ball owners information said as far as positions. So, I pulled it out of my case just now and snapped a photo of it.

I was referring to the positions in reverse order.

So, the position “4” I used last night is actually position 2. “Jazz bass” territory.

The position “2” I used a few weeks back is actually 4: “P bass” territory to my ears.

Ah, then your comments about the tone make more sense to me now. Position 2 sounds to me like a Jazz tone with both pickups on full, but even beefier. It's great with a little mid boost if you need a little more note articulation. And Position 4 to me sounds Precision like, but with a Stingray twist. Can't say often enough how much I like #4. I do use all 5 but, if I had to pick one position to use all the time, #4 gets my vote.

But that's just my opinion. I know others think differently and I'm ok with that.

Ok. I thought you had it backwards. And yes your assessments are right on.

All of my Specials are 4H (silly, I know). I have one 4HH, a pre-Special BFR which doesn't get much use. With all the good comparison videos out there, I have yet to see/hear a comparison of 4HH StingRays, pre-Special and Special.
On the BFR, I always thought Position 1 was best anyway. Never cared much for especially 3 and 5, but I should take some time with it and experiment some more.

I'm going to have to give position 2 a bit more of a try... I keep getting hooked on 1 and 4. What eq settings do you like for pos 4 and 2?

I also prefer position 4 the most, but have used position 2 a couple of times at this one venue where it just sounds really good with EQ set flat. Definitely sounds much better live in a band mix than at home and I have thought about trying it again at other venues, but it is just too damn hard to get away from position 4.
