For me the opposite - I have always disliked the cheap, nasty, sharp edged , stupidly over sized, clover leaf tuners typically found on Fenders and musicman.

My Warwick thumb has Schaller or Gotoh tuners, my 80s Steinberger has nothing at all.

The tuners on my Stingray special feel unusual but I dont associate it with anything ( except the stingray Special ) I'm quite OK with them.

The Ernie Ball strings supplied with the bass however I found awful - I couldnt wait to get them off and get my elixirs on - yet people swear by EB strings.

Go figure.

Check your pickup height. I also noticed when I had two maple fretboard Specials they was more boomier then my rosewood Special.

This was helpful! Much more usable tone, although I still miss the non-Special sizzle up top. That said, I was running through some fast finger funk and was ripping things up with the treble turned down and the mids up.

Two months in with my Special and I have to say it is becoming my favorite bass. I had 3 other Specials that tone wise was a little disappointing for me. Only difference really is they were all maple and this one is rosewood. I like the look of maple better so that is why I always choose maple, but I think maby my ears like rosewood more on a Special. IDK.
Anyways this Special is my favorite and a definite keeper.

Some people can't hear the difference between the maple , rosewood and ebony , but I sure can .

My very 1st Special was Ebony 5HH Aqua Sparkle. BLUETIFUL to behold , but the black hardware and Ebony were a no go for me. I did love the way the Ebony felt under my fingers. I hear more sustain and the highs just sing differently to my ears . Much more clarity . Takes it into what I describe as Ken Smith territory . The notes bloom almost immediately and just stay put.

Maple on the Specials is my favorite and rosewood a close 2nd. Rosewood and a well broken in set of Slinky Cobalt flats is pure magic flats it just amazing for me . I like it all on maple …. TI Flats, Labella's , fresh rounds, love it all.

So much variety to suit individual needs is wonderful for us players .

I have played a lot of different Specials and they haven't all sounded the same. Glad you found the right one for you! That's they way I feel about my Aqua Sparkle 5H.

I don't always feel the board makes a big difference, but I do notice it on the Stingray Specials. Ebony is my fav for sure

I know I'm late to the party, but regarding the batteries question I actually checked mine yesterday, as I always do it around Income Tax time, and they are still good. I'm going to say that the HD Yellow Stingray HH is going on 2.5 years now with the same batteries and they still have plenty of life left in them.

As for the Tuner question, yeah there's nothing wrong or cheap about the EBMM Stingray tuners. There is no way I would ever think about changing mine.

On another note, I used my HD Yellow on Saturday along with an ESP/LTD Bunny Brunel through a Laney Digbeth 500 and two GK NEO112's. Wow what an outstanding sound and feel. The Ray sounds good through all of my amps, But through the Laney, wow.

HD Yellow was one of the great original run finishes. I didn't know until recently that the HD was for Harley Davidson . I thought it meant High Definition !!:bag:

I'm with dave, we need another pic . It's has to be one of more rare finishes . I hardly ever see them. People must hold on to them.
