An American nurse tests negative for Ebola and gets to go home (never should have been quarantined in a tent). A 5 year old West African boy has to be retested after a negative test????? Really? How about diagnosing the reason why he is sick and treat him for it! Something just doesn't pass the smell test on this one.

The nurse who was quarantined after returning from treating Ebola patients in West Africa has given the State of Maine until Thursday to let her move freely, setting up what could be a test case of whether state quarantines are legal.

The nurse, Kaci Hickox, 33, who was confined first by New Jersey when she came back to the United States and then by Maine, did a blitz on morning television challenging her confinement by Maine officials.

“I remain really concerned by these mandatory quarantine policies,” Ms. Hickox told ABC News via Skype from Maine on Wednesday morning. “I think we are only adding to stigmatization that again is not based on science or evidence.”

If the state does not lift her quarantine order by Thursday morning, she said, “I will go to court to attain my freedom.”

Maine is acting worse than New Jersey. What's up with that? The Maine medical community wrote a scathing letter to the Governor about how they are treating the nurse and the harm their polices are creating overall. One Maine town opted to keep a teacher out of work because she visited Dallas!

I think at this point, the nurse in question is her own worst enemy in the court of public opinion (not that there's anything wrong with her living her life) and the whole thing seems a bit contrived at this point. Next comes the shaming of the small minded rural folk up in Maine by MSNBC. It's not too hard to figure out that this whole thing is has become political circus, with both sides playing up a certain stance for points. It's so pathetic.

True and I should have included Fox as the other network basically positioning it's reporting to focus on the other ridiculous side of all of this, though I have a hard time blaming municipalities for their judgement since this had initially been mishandled from the top down from the start, creating an atmosphere of confusion and uncertainty.

The order, signed on Friday by Judge Charles C. LaVerdiere, the chief judge for the Maine District Courts who serves in Kennebec and Somerset counties, said the nurse, Kaci Hickox, “currently does not show symptoms of Ebola and is therefore not infectious.”

The order requires Ms. Hickox to submit to daily monitoring for symptoms, to coordinate her travel with state health officials, and to notify them immediately if symptoms appear. Ms. Hickox has agreed to follow the requirements.

I don't want to overstate the significance of this, but I found it noteworthy that the judge made this particular assertion.

Also noteworthy was his recommendation that she remain cognizant of the publics concern and to try to not make it a bigger spectacle then it needs to be. That was probably the point when her lawyer advised the press conference...why let a perfectly good drama fizzle out when the dramatized Lifetime version would look so much better with a ceremonious victory?

This is the standard protocol that the nurse was supposed to follow (and was following), until the whole quarantine debacle in New Jersey and Maine.
