Ebow and Physical Health

Some health risks of magnetism:

1. Pacemaker
2. History of vascular surgery - if vascular clips or a stent were used
3. Spinal cord stimulator (pain management; neuropathy)
4. Metal in the eye
5. Any instance when metal is implanted in soft tissue; anchored in bone is no problem - rigid construct.

People with pacemakers generally can't get MRI's because the leads can move from the magnetic pull.

Anchored in bone is still no good if it is magnetic- you aren't worried about the MRI pulling things out of bone- it'll induce such tremendous vibration in the metal that it will cause burns.

Sounds crazy but I work in an OR as a CST. And have had other jobs including patient transporter and EMT. An MRI has a strong enough pull to move metal with a surprising amount of force. You can't even go in the room with a metal pen because it'll turn it into a flying object. That said I also work with orthopedic surgeons. And a lot of the implants they use these days are not as effected by Magnatism because instead of using stainless steel we use a lot more titanium and cobalt. And I wouldn't worry much about joint replacement implants as I doubt the ebow will have any effect on them.

I would personally be cautious about other surgeries. For example nearly all surgeons use metal clips to clip the cystic artery and cystic duct when removing the gall bladder. If you've had your appendix removed laparoscopically i can almost promise they used a 35 or 45 stapler. Vascular surgery also includes the use of clips. Even if it's just an AV shunt or fistula we use ligaclips and dislodging one could lead to a hematoma.

All that said the Ebows magnetic pull is no where near as strong as an mri. Infact you'll see using it with bass that it works a lot better on a g or high c string than it does on heavier gauge strings because it doesn't have enough energy to get the other strings moving as fast. I really wouldn't worry about it that much. I definetly wouldn't hold it near a surgical site. But even if you had a pacemaker I seriously doubt holding an ebow in your hand is going to effect anything. Just don't hold it near the leads. Fyi pacemaker leads in all the pacemakers I've assisted on actually anchor in. The leads are kind of similar to a bass string in that theres a core and an outer layer. The core actually hooks into the muscle tissue by spinning the inner wire. So it won't move very easily but if it does move it's likely tearing the muscle a little in the process.

Those are orders of magnitude (10X at least) greater than the Earth's gravity. They are strong enough to pull metal canisters that weigh at least 10lbs into them like a rocket. They will deactivate your credit cards and make your watch go dead. And people are still alive who have had multiple exposures. The pickups and magnet in your guitars and Ebow are puny things compared to an MRI.
 
So the Ebow emits a magnetic wave.. couldnt this harm you physically?
MRI machines are said to be harmless, unless of course you have some surgically (or otherwise) magnetic materials that could be ripped around and cause injury.
I suspect the magnetic forces emitted from an eBow is *slightly* less than an MRI. LOL.

Anyone who states that an eBow is gonna do you damage needs to prove their statement with facts.
