Love that blue Lull P5 Ed! Wishing you continued success and more clients.

edit: Just a thought: Since Ed's ability to do these demos stems from manufacturers and their perception of the buying public's demand for said demos, maybe we TBers can discuss and organize which brands/products we would like to see reviewed (either in this thread or a new one). Ed (or one of us, or one of the brand's endorsers, etc.) can contact the respective companies and steer them towards the thread so they see what we want to have reviewed and can arrange things with Ed accordingly. If this violates any forum rules, my apologies. I think it would kill a few birds with one stone; We get to see the products we want reviewed by someone who does it damn well, the manufacturers get great exposure, and Ed makes some cash. Thoughts?

Disagree. Might as well plug in a synthesizer. He has the most lifeless playing I've ever heard anywhere. You want a real nasty groove? You won't hear it from him. There's no love for the instrument for him. It's just about him, not the music. You can tell from his playing and even better, his instructional books, which are awful. The examples aren't musical, they're digital.

I can name easily 100 bass players who are better. As a matter of fact, some beginning students are better than him. He does a disservice to the bass and to music.

Dunno where that comes from but I politely disagree. His reviews are the reason I chose a GB streamliner 900 and focus 4x10 cab, always incredibly helpful and informative. His blues basics book got me going there, fantastic resource that I've come back to time and again for standards and brushing up, and his playing is superb - tasteful yet groovin', and always in the pocket - exactly where a bassist should be.

You should PM him, He's a member on this forum. He's also a pretty cool guy and a monster player.
If your lucky, he might send you a copy of his book, and then one day you can have big label manufacturers send you products to review. Until then, keep trolling Douche

I'm a big fan of Ed, especially his "Blues you can Use" column. I'm an older guy, aspiring to hold down the low end on the blues. Ed, keep posting... those of us who weren't listed in your "chops list" think you're amazing and playing great.

Two things.

You've all not met the guy in RL.

He's a terrible player. Technically proficient but there's no soul in his playing and his instruction is awful beyond belief. I've said it before I'll say it again: He does a disservice to the instrument of bass and to music in general.

Well that's your opinion. Great thing about them is they do differ, and we're allowed to stand on different sides of the fence. Me, I'd love to meet him in RL, I think he does a lot for the bassist community, I love his column in BP magazine, and he's a damn sight better than myself. I do however think you should have a little more respect than to badmouth the guy, especially in the company of people who respect him and the work he does for our benefit.

Not everyone is going to be a big Ed Friedland fan. Just like not everyone is a Hadrien Feraud(sp?) Fan, or Steve Bailey fan. Etc.

No need to flame someone for their opinion.

I'm no fan of him personally, he has chops, but I find him a bit sterile sounding as a player too, but it's cool to love what he does, we all have players we admire and dislike. Rudeness is classless either way it is being spewed.

Yes, it is.

I agree that constructive dissenting opinions should be welcome. Categorizing Ed Friedland as performing a 'disservice to the instrument of bass and to music in general', is neither informed criticism nor constructive dissent; it's just rude.

+1. I dont like Jaco, Wooten, and a whole lot of other bassists. It's to be expected with anyone. You can't like everyone's music. But openly bagging on Ed like that is not necessary. All Mechanical needed to say was "I don't like his stuff and I disagree with everything said thus far", and personally I would have accepted that. I think being on the other end of a computer instead of in the same room as someone is far too often license to make remarks more far more inflammatory and rude than necessary.

Also why bother post at all? The title of the thread speaks for itself. If you dont like his stuff, and you post that sort of material in this thread, you're looking for a fight IMO.

I've met Ed and taken lessons with him. Time and money well spent. Great guy with a good sense of humor.
