Ed Friedland kills it...

Two things.

You've all not met the guy in RL.

He's a terrible player. Technically proficient but there's no soul in his playing and his instruction is awful beyond belief. I've said it before I'll say it again: He does a disservice to the instrument of bass and to music in general.

Yeah, I have met him. He's a super cool guy.

Did he steal your girlfriend in high school, or something? Not thinking he has any soul is one thing, but based on the ridiculous hyperbole--Seriously, "awful beyond belief?" That must be why he keeps getting work and you remain anonymous internet troll. You obviously have some grudge/personal beef that simply makes you look, well--jealous.

So, what are your credentials? You can say something as often as you want, but it doesn't make you right. It simply makes you look like a tool.

So, what makes you an expert? How's that 15 watt Crate amp working on your world tours and Nashville recording sessions?

Hmm... I know you can't please everyone, so I always accept a disgruntled voice as part of the deal. Sounds like this Mechanical fellow claims to have met me in RL (uhm... am I so out of it that I didn't know that meant "real life"?). Perhaps he didn't like me. Gee sorry. I'm from New York City and reserve the right to be a total dick when I feel it's necessary. You may have just brought out the best in me.

Anyway, it's fun being flamed and hacked to pieces by an anonymous assassin. It takes great courage to attack people under the "cloak of invisibility", and I applaud you.

Ed Friedland mercilessly killed my great uncle Nathan in a bar fight.

Dirty fighter, too.

Um, well, I hate to admit this but I kind of know this Ed guy "in real life" and - you remember when Bonnie Raitt said, "Any friend of Little Feat is a friend of mine"?

I feel the same way about Little Feat.

Ed, though?

I'm sorry, lost my train of thought here.

Wait, Ed FRIEDLAND?

Sorry, Mister Anonymous Internet Troll, but you're weapons-grade ignorant.

My name is Jack, you can hate me too if you want, I like that sort of thing.

Let's see. I live about 60 miles from Ed. Know him in RL. Respect him as a person and player.

Of course I am new to the game since I only started in 1958 so my playing is probably mechanical. I only played 7 paying gigs last week so I may not be professional enough to have a legitimate opinion.

Seriously, the kind of guy who started this thread is why I left Talkbass for many years.

Why not practice instead of embarrassing yourself like this?

Disagree. Might as well plug in a synthesizer. He has the most lifeless playing I've ever heard anywhere. You want a real nasty groove? You won't hear it from him. There's no love for the instrument for him. It's just about him, not the music. You can tell from his playing and even better, his instructional books, which are awful. The examples aren't musical, they're digital.

I can name easily 100 bass players who are better. As a matter of fact, some beginning students are better than him. He does a disservice to the bass and to music.

Start naming, troll. And when you're done lets see what you can do with a bass.

I used to think I was already pretty good playing slap bass when I started out, but Ed's Hal-Leonard DVD showed me a lot, and his technique stopped me from snapping G-strings (no, not those kind).

He's no slouch on guitar, either!

See, he pulled Ed out, got a reaction, and it will feed his need for attention if he is a real troll and not just voicing his opinion.

No worries Ed, enough love here to countermand any efforts to diminish your abilities.....LOL

Oh, I don't mind engaging in the inanities of the Internet sometimes. He's not my first sailor. And besides - I'm such an attention whore, it's always nice to have a reason to shave and wear pants.

Of all the things I have read from you start with BP way back when......that has to be one of the funniest things you have said. Actually chuckled aloud.

Hi Ed, I just wanted to thank you for all your reviews. You were one of the reasons I took a chance pulling the trigger on a Genz Benz SM 9.2. I am happy I did. I love that head. I really like how you showcase a piece of gear. You set the standard pretty high for how gear is presented. I know we are all working within the limitations of the internet and all, but I think you give the gear you review a good, honest, break down to let others decide what they like. So keep on keeping on.

I utterly despise LOL postings on internet forums, so please feel bad for making me do this:

LOL. ROFL.

Thanks anyway for improving my playing.
