Eden Amps - Still Cool ??

All those typical anti-Eden whiners will be here shortly. Thats the handful of guys who want to whine about how crappy Eden is lately.

I however, have owned and gigged a number of Eden products. Each and every experience was positive. The amps delivered the goods tonally, with no issues.

Still cool? To me, hells yes.

The 405 is still very impressive relative to the competition in weight, volume, power and features. The WT550, while a little heavy, is also a great sounding head... warm, a little tube bloom, but still modern.

I am unimpressed with the new 260 (not as small as originally promised and underpowered versus similarly priced competition), and the 1205 (lot's of issues... they are blowing a couple new ones out on the 'specials' page at Bass Northwest if anyone is interested). The 800 is still an industry standard, and sounds great IMO.

IMO the WT-550 is a dependable & great sounding amp. Most of the quality problems that I've heard about recently have been related to the 1205 (input sectiion) and 800B models.
Edens basically do what Edens have always done, produce that classic Eden tone.
I owned a WT550B for several months and never had any problems. I also have a WT-440 at church that's always been real dependable.
I seriously considered getting a new WT550 a couple weeks ago but opt'd to go with a Thunderfunk because IMO it's a more versatile sounding amp and it has a few more features that I wanted (mute sw. & tube/SS sw.). Plus, they're fairly close to the same price new. Used Eden WT-550B's go for around $700-800. Used Thunderfunks TFB-550B's go for $900-1100.

I have two Eden rigs and love them both. I have a DC112XLT combo that is really great for almost any gig I do. It's got the WT330 head in it--it's just great! I also have a WT600 that I run through an early Goliath I (essentially and Eden 410T) and it absolutely kills. I think the only things on my wish list now are an Eden D410XLT and a D112XLT.

I have to say that I bought my Edens after playing through them as a back line at an outdoor gig. I was so impressed, I sold off a bunch of gear to buy my DC112XLT and haven't looked back since.

I use an 9 year old Eden WT400 (400w @ 4ohm) with two Eden cabs...a D212XLT and a D210XST. This rig rocks big time...clear, clean and loud with a very nice tube warmth (it's a hybrid with one 12AX7 in the pre) and lots of bottom. The 210XST's frequency range goes down to 30Hz, pretty darn low for 10's! The amp is only 12x12 inches and will fit in a 2u Effects rack! Edens gear is as good as it gets..the cabs are cast frame, a bit heavy, but beautifully full sound and built like tanks.

If your interested mostly in the quality of your sound, then you will want Eden. If you want flash first, then maybe look elsewhere, but I have no problem with the looks, either....here is my WT400 with a D212XLT. (See it with the D210XST stacked on top on page 3 of this thread)

I'm running 2 rigs at the moment a WT 400 and a BMaxT with 2402. The 2402 is a monster - no doubt about that. The BMaxT is very good. Everything my old Alembic was and more. Truthfully my experience with the WT is making me think that I should snag an 800 instead of the BMaxT/2402 setup. It's that good tonally!

Yeah, I decided that if or when I think I need more than 400w, I will go for the 1205 power amp and use the 400 as a pre...the 400's are legendary when it comes to their warmth.

Still cool? To me, hell yes.

+1!

I own the 550, and a mid-nineties Highwayman head.......it's still kicking ......

Are Eden amps still cool...still in vogue? Hmmm. I can't say. Nor do I care. No disrespect meant to the OP. I have been playing (and more importantly gigging) with an Eden WT-400 since I bought it new in October of '02. It sounds wonderful to my ears and to the ears of my audiences. It has been stone reliable so far.

Played it this afternoon for a 4-hour gig. I've played at this venue many times with the 400 and a variety of different cabinets. Today I paired it with my Epifani UL-410. Bass was my Stambaugh 5. In this venue it's the best combination I've tried. Sometimes your rig sounds so good you get in a 'zone'. Today I was in that zone. A huge, warm, room-filling sound that still had clarity. Oh my! It was affecting the band and the audience. What a big sound.

Of course, a 400 watt into 4ohm amp has it's limitations. Within those limitations, however, it kills. I have my eyes on an amp with more power, but the little 400 will likely stay in my gear family for a long while.

Personally, I'm sad for what has happened to Eden. But not surprised. When I first heard about the buyout, I had a feeling there would be problems. And there were. Does that diminish the value of my buying decision? Absolutely not! Do I sincerely feel pain for the folks who have had problems with post-buyout gear or customer service? Absolutely yes!

Thinking, observant members of this bass community will read through all the posts (positive and negative) about Eden gear and will come to their own decisions. The first thing I do when I read a 'bashing' type comment by a member about ANY brand product is check out some of their other posts. Like it or not, people leave a trail. By checking the trail, it can help give some insight as to whether their opinions can be taken seriously. Another thing I do is check out what kind of gear they play and if they actually gig in the real world. That can help too, if I come across a 'bashing' type comment. YMMV. I know mine certainly does. :hmm:;):D

Well Mal, if you decide to let the WT400 go... give me a shout! :hiding:

I really have got to get my hands on one of those 1212XLT's
