Eden Vs. SWR?

Well, I haven't heard Eden's but theres some lower midrange frequencies that cuts through very well too, mayby they're boosted. (I shure don't hope this sounds like I'm some wise tech-guy. I'm not! I just noticed what the different frequencies did to the sound, using the 12 band EQ on my old Hartke.)
The interplay between cab and amp is surely gonna play a role here too. My gearpusher said that Ashdown amps, for instence, has to be heard on Ahsdown cabs to be judged rightly. He was right: I tried an Ashdown amp on my old Trace Elliott cab (which isn't that far from Ashdown) and it sounded nice, though too basy for me, but on my new Goliath cab, - holy moly. It sounded awfull!! The sound just completely fell apart. Mayby thats the hifi caracter of SWR that made the special sound of Ashdown come through in a way it was not supposed to. I'm not saying that SWR are better than Ashdown or others here, but its like seing the hot chick from the disco in broad daylight... eh? -Sorry!

I own both amps. No I don't really wanna carry four cabinets but I can imagine the need arising when I might need to run 2 (4) ohm cabinets, something which the Eden can't do. I doubt that you can wrong with either Eden or SWR - pick the one that sounds best to your ears.

My eden can run with two 4ohms cabinets. Its a WT-800, so it runs sterio, dont rule out Eden just cause it cant run past 4ohms on the 300, and 400. every model after those run sterio, so that you can run it mono-bridged at 8ohms, or you can run sterio at 4ohms (meaning if you want, 4 8ohms cab's).

It really comes down to personal taste. SWR and Eden are both GREAT systems (I am less jazzed about Hartke due to the harsh midrange thing...which may be your cup). I gravitate towards Eden because, over time, I thump less and go for a more solid, bassy sound. Eden articulates this sound very well. If you are a thumper, like the "piano wire" sound, and are constanltly searching for sweeter treble, SWR may be better. SWR may have a better balance across the frequency spectrum, but to my ears Eden has a stronger, more defined BASS sound...which is, after all, the instrument I play and the sound I am after.

Alot of the time, people in the stores (myself included) slap and pop like mad when trying out a bass or amp. But when playing with your band, how much do you slap? Me, hardly ever. Control yourself and play bass lines that you would actually play on stage to try out equipment. With amps, it is easier to buy and return them because they are not so personal (like a bass). Try em both out. Buy the one that works for you. Or, you could buy em both and give me the one you don't like!

In response to all the questions about cab impedance. It comes down to this: you can run 2 ohms, but it is very bad on the amp, you run the amp at almost a short. generally you would want to stick to no less than 4 ohms. Sure you get more power, but you run the amp very,very hard, not a good thing. if you want to run more cabs, then get an amp with a lot of power,and hook up your cabs in series. this will let you run more cabs and not damage the amp. As for which amp is better, pick the one that you think sound s the best for what you will be playing.

I believe that the output doesnt change with tube amps, when you change impiedence, different type of transformer, and basicly, if you ran the amp down to 2 ohms, and your amp only has an 8ohms and 4 ohms switch, you'd break your head very quickly, i highly recomend you dont do it.

In responce to air_leech's original question:

I would say SWR/Eden are in a similar league. As to whether one is better than the other - try them out for yourself, all this stuff about running to 2 ohms is fairly irrelevant IMHO because if you really needed the extra volume you could use the PA or get a bigger amp in the first place. As for versatility, my Bass 350 is basic as far as controls go...but it's how you use it, not what you've got that counts. Let your ears be the judge :)
