Eden WT400 + EA Wizzy 112 = ...?

I'm thinking of buying a second hand Euphonic Audio Wizzy 112 cab, for practicing and small gigs, to be used with my Eden WT400. My bass playing friend (the guys who's selling it) says that they will be fine together, but I just wanted to get a second opinion because from my understanding of the specs they won't be. I have read information on matching heads/cabinets before, but perhaps I misunderstood.

For convenience -

Wizzy 112

Configuration: 1 x 12"
Woofer: Proprietary EA 12" full-range driver with Whizzer cone
Sensitivity: 103dB @ 1m
Sound Pressure: 126dB @ 1m
Power Handling: 200 watts
Impedance: 4 ohms
Connection Type: Two Speakon combo connectors (1/4" & Speakon)
Handle: One integrated custom cup handle on each side
Other Features: Proprietary EA 12" full-range driver with Whizzer cone

Eden WT400

Power 8Ω/4Ω 235/400W RMS

Thanks in advance!

Each Wizzy cab is 4ohms.

If you daisy chain them to the Eden you will have 2ohms.

Does the Eden do 2ohms? That is potentially your problem.

Nope, it's an older one.

But I'm only planning on using the one by itself anyway?

Edit:
Hmm, I think I get it now... Basically I have enough power to blow the speaker, but only if I set the volume too high?

You would be running 400W into a 200W cab, so as long as you:

1. Use your ears and turn the volume down if you hear anything strange

2. Use your ears and turn the bass knob down if you hear anything strange

You should be fine.

The EA cabs are built very tough -- they can probably handle more than 200w peaks. Just keep an ear out for speaker farting or distortion.

If it is a concern for you, consider your options with cab rated at a higher wattage. You may also want to consider getting two 8ohm cabs so that you can add a second cabinet for louder settings.

Also, since the Eden head doesn't do two ohms you should never daisy chain the two 4ohm cabs together with this head.

I've use my WT-400 with EA VL-208s, Eden D410XLT, and D212XLT, Avatar SB112, Guild/Hartke 410, Hartke 4.5XL, and 210XL, and various combinations of those. It'll be fine. Here's the deal with speaker power handling ratings- they refer to the thermal power, but they really don't have much credence as to what kind of amp you can use. As long as you listen and you don't hear things coming out of the speaker that sound like speaker destruction, you'll be OK.

However, unless you absolutely KNOW you'll NEVER want to use that Wizzy with another cabinet, I'd pass. I made the same mistake with my first Eden cabinet- I figured I'd get a 4 ohm D410XLT so I could get the total 400 WRMS out of it. But when I realized that moving more air was going to have bigger impact than the difference between 235 WRMS and 400 WRMS, I was in trouble. The amp is rated to a 4 ohm minimum load so one 4-ohm box is all I could run.

Having two 8-ohm cabinets is MUCH more flexible than a single 4-ohm box. Too bad too, because I really like the idea of the Wizzy. BTW, while I like the EA VL-208s I had, they're kind of inefficient so I had to use two of them all the time. I still have one, but it works better for me with the Avatar under it than the two 208's stacked ever did.

Of course, that's "wrong" for optimum speaker utility, except that it SOUNDS good when I play it- the only valid test.

Cheers for the help adbass :). I might look into getting an 8ohm cab instead, to keep my options open.

You're most welcome

EA makes really lovely cabinets. They are very clear sounding, well constructed cabs.

JTE gives good advice. Two 8ohm 12s (like Bergantinos, Eden or Epifanis) would probably suit you better in the long run. Of course, you could also get two 2x10 cabs to have a modular 4x10 that you could stack vertically. That would be nice.

I have used my Wizzy 12 many times with my WT400. There is no mismatch between these two units. The combination sounds great, and can get surprisingly loud.

As stated above, the only reason NOT to buy that great cabinet is if you anticipate needing a second cabinet at some point.

FYI - I run my WT400 with an EDEN XLT112 sometimes. Usually for practice. This setup doesn't give me the depth or roundness that I like. Very middy. I am not familiar with the Wizzy and it is probably a completely different beast then the Eden 112, but the reason why I bring this up is that when I pair my Eden 112 with another cabinet, specifically a 410T, something magical happens. IMO the Eden 112 is meant to be paired with another cab. I can by with the 112 for practices and small gigs, but if I want a real hi-fi sound I pair it with my 410.

I really liked the idea of having a small 112 cab for small gigs and practices, but now I think if I had just the Eden 112 as my only cab option then I would be really diasspointed due to the limitation of this particular cab. BUT I really love combining it with another cab.

In the future i am moving back to 2x10 combo as my practice/small gig rig. I have an old nemesis that needs some repairs, but fits the bill. The WT400 is heavy and awkward, but delivers in sound. If I want to sound good and have the time to move equipment it will always be my goto amp, but life can more simpler and lighter then a WT400 and 112.

I used to use the Eden head with a EAcxl112 - great combo (not a wizzy though, 8 ohm). But through two cxl110's (4ohm load) it would go into thermal shutdown if pushed at all hard. Always recovered after ten mins or so, but really couldn't take it.

The WT400 will run at 4 ohms all day long. Not sure which Eden you had but that is not an issue with the WT 400 nor with the WT 800 which is essentially a WT400 front end powering a pair of 400 back ends...

I would think that the WT-400 and Wizzy combo would be a really beautiful sounding rig. if the deal on the Wizzy is attractive enough I'd go for it second cab be damned. If an 8 ohm Wizzy were available then it would be my choice as having the flexibility would be nice. Still the Wizzy and WT-400 would handle the vast majority of the gig's I do ...

I ran my WT-400 with a 4 ohm Bag End D10XD - the deep version of the 2x10 with tweeter. That was a great sounding rig. I did need to get to louder at one point so I canned that rig in favor of larger and have now migrated back smaller. It's taken maybe a year of messing about to get back to rig that I like as much as the WT400/Bag End rig ... either an MB-500 driving 1 fEarful 12/6 or a WT800 driving 2 of them ... (well the second one is under construction but it's complete overkill for me anyway ...)

I don't know about the Wizzy, but the VL208 is not a very efficient cabinet. So I had to push the amp a bit harder than I expected when using them to get the volume I needed with them. My WT-400 (November 1997) never had any trouble, I just had to turn it up more than I expected and the output clip light came on more than I expected. If the Wizzy is similarly power-hungry (and you're not moving as much air with a single Wizzy as I was with a pair of VL-208s) that could explain the thermal shut-down.

i got a wizzy 112 with the same thought, practice and small gigs. i use it with either an ashdown abm 500 or an old GK400RB. it is an excellent sounding cab but I would only recommend for studio, mic'd live gig, or acoustic/jazz unmic'd. i don't know what you're playing but most people would find it a little quiet for any medium+ volume band. You'll risk pushing it too hard to keep up. At it's price point you could find something that handles a bit more power, aguilar, bergantino, epifani; if thats what you need. hope this helps.
