Eden WT800C amp woes!! Anyone else having Problems?

My experience with eden has been good and bad. To sum it up shortly i think Eden has absolutely fantastic designs and they make some of the best amps in the market and its truly some of the best stuff ive played thru but the company is F***ed! They lack basic essentials to run a business. The different branches of the company don't communicate well with each other and they have trouble getting things done. Lane Baldwin does an excellent job of customer service and running the forum but it seems that his plate is always full of random tasks that have to be done and the second something leaves his hands into someone else in the company nothing goes right. They have poor product control. Over the last 9 or so months ive been sending my 1205 back because ive never had one that truly worked 100% out of the box. Ive had about 8 of them i think. The one i have now works properly except for a small hum which obviously wasnt regulated well at the factory. I find a big difference between the gain knob on all these amps even though they are all up to date with the final gain mod. Some of them clipped around 9 o clock while some of them clipped at like 3 o clock. In the end i think they make some of the best sounding equipment on the market and i have never had any trouble with their cabinets but i think i can say i would not buy an amp from them ever again.

I just played a new 1205 last week just to see if they've fixed anything...

nope.

As I mentioned in another thread, with my MTD 635's 18volt Bartolini preamp on FULL BLAST, both pickups, and all the tone controls completely maxed out, and playing my bass by smashing my hand down as hard as I could on all 6 strings, I could not get the clip light to even flash for a nano-second. Nothing - nada. Then, when you push the turbo boost and 'dynamic tone' buttons, suddenly you're dangerously well into the red zone - totally stupid. And the sound was horrid, and had no where NEAR the power of the 800B - not even close, probably because the gain structure is just totally ****** on that amp.

Horrid thing.

Cheers,
Cameron

Well i wouldnt say that about the amp. When you first turn it on it you usually cant set the gain for a min or two i guess just because the tubes have to warm up. But my complaint about the amp was not that it was too hard to get it to clip but that each amp even with the current gain mod clipped at a different level due to poor product control.

As for the actual tone of the amp i think its fantastic. Mine is extremely clear, warm and punchy at the same time.

Well that seems too much. Both the A and B series wt800s are reliable, but if it's an A series, $1200.00 seems too much to pay unless it is in virtual NEW condition (i.e. never used). I'd say $600.00 would be reasonable if it's in VERY good shape. But has your friend tried out any Markbass heads?

Its for my dad.. He did try the markbass, no dice. He digs Eden. Do you know where we can find a B series? Thanks

1200 is really overpriced especially for an A. In my experience getting used A or Bs are hard to find at a good price. I suggest getting a C new or used because it really isnt that much more. If you want to look for a new 800C go to www.alphaaudioworks.com I can recommend them for great service and great pricing. Give Andy an email at [email protected] I think they also have a used B instock as well but no idea of the price. I would definitely get a B or C instead of an A.

From what I understand the gain structure on the WT800 V's the WT1205 is quite different so trying the same settings as an 800 on a 1205 if probably going to give you different results.
These days WT800 A's, B's, C's all seem to be running as reliable as each other and Lane and a few of them at Eden have done some great work turning around a bad situation with poor CS and some shabby QC. They're not quite perfect yet, but it's way better than what it was back when this thread started................

BTW................why are we posting in a thread from 2007???

I just can't sit by while Lane's BS is perpetuated, even by someone who innocently believes it is true.

Gain settings are the same on every amp, pre-amp, board, channel strip, recording unit, effect pedal - you want to run it as hot as possible without distortion for optimum S/N ratio, dynamics, tone, etc. You run it up to clipping, and back it off a few notches, as bassplayers have done since variable gain was introduced several generations ago.

Your quote ('the gain structure is very different') is from a posting by Lane to me on the Eden forum years ago when I was complaining about how screwed up the amp I received was, and has been repeated ad nauseum to try to excuse their BS and to diffuse ridicule of their faulty design, and try to not have to further warranty their product from the litany of continuing users complaints after their multiple feeble attempts at actually fixing the problem. It will remain perhaps one of the worst product launches in bass playing history; certainly the worst thing that I have ever been involved in in my 39 years of bass playing; the most insulting, the most I have ever been mislead and lied to, and the longest I have ever had to wait for service which never actually came (just more lies) by a musical equipment manufacturer, and that for one of the most expensive amps I have ever purchased.

There is nothing different about the 1205 gain structure, except the design of the amp is ******. You can't set the gain on that imbecilic contraption because half of it is held back in anticipation of you implementing the turbo boost, and both dynamic tone boost (or whatever they're called) buttons, which yields the most horrid bass sound in the history of the world, and one which mankind has not yet found a musical use for (thankfully). Otherwise, you are sitting there with a 30dB pad on, not getting the proper S/N ratio, dynamics, sound, the ability to get the compressor to light up, getting anything in the two separate FX loops to ramp up to anywhere near unity gain (btw, be prepared to buy two sets of effects if you buy that amp; the FX loops are not global - channel 1 is for channel one, channel two is only for channel two) or getting max power out of the amp section. I repeat, my 18 volt Bartolini preamp, totally maxxed out, all tone controls on full, both pickups, with me SLAMMING all 6 strings of my bass could barely get the gain light (the green one) to blink, let alone anywhere NEAR approach clipping; push the boost buttons, and you're solidly in the red. It's useless, unless you actually LIKE the sound with those three buttons in, and plan on using it all the time; I'd certainly like to see a show of hands on that, or how diplomatic Tom Bowlus could be with his best legalese upon hearing that amp with those buttons pushed! The one I played last week had all of the identical problems to the one I first unboxed in 2005, except the shutdown explosion was now about 50 dB quieter than the one I had.

Oh, and the rack ears fit.

The rest of it, the important part, was still ******.

Cheers,
Cameron

I always like to post after one of Cameron's new entries in his Eden Book of Grudges.

First, I always say, "I am very sorry for your poor Eden experience."

Next, I typically say, "My Eden product and customer service experiences have been excellent."

To a question about what to buy, I typically respond, "Go to a store and demo." Or, "Buy from a store like MF, where you have a a specified trial period to demo with your other gear."

Let your ears and experience be the judge.

Best!

BassFlute.. Relax that Ticker of yours... dood.. Lane is not worth it. :) I and many other know that he is a Liar.. :mad:If i called him anything else i would be a liar, and that is one thing that I am not.. I never heard so mush BS flow so freely from anyone, and he does it so easily.:D

at least now I have a little credibility instead of looking like a total ***. And my heart can take it now!

Just can't stand idley by...

Your starting to scare me.... Thank god the used WT8008 comes with a 24 hour trial period. What should I look for... I'm a guitarist, this head is for my dad... I know nothing about bass rigs.. THANKS EVERYONE.....

If you found a WT-800B, I don't recall any issues with that one, in fact, it was the best of the releases, IMO.

The WT800 is a truly great bass amp, one of the classics, with the B being the best (imho) iteration. The C had some issues, and it being recent, I personally wouldn't trust it, but the original 800 is an industry standard ( for aver 10 years) for a reason; small(ish), very powerful, flexible (bi-amp, stereo, dual mono, bridged mono) two effect loops, really good eq, and generally bulletproof.

I still use one. And actually, even though I hate the company, I still love that amp.

If the one you can get is a good deal, and appears reliable, go for it.

Just pray you never need service....

:bawl:

although that MAY be improving.

Cameron
