Eden WTDI Direct Box/Preamp

Yes. Unusable after 9. That's bad. Otherwise you're getting Eden clarity for $129. That's good.
I'm so bummed. I had to return mine--the mid-shift button did nothing.
I would love to try the Sadowsky DI but it's not worth it right now. In the meantime, I'm sticking with my Martin & Co. acoustic preamp. I think it was intended for DB or classical instruments but I tell you what, I love it.
I'm a sucker for preamps & equalizers.
There's no problem with the WTDI - it's going to distort if you drive it too much.
It's also pretty touchy - it either clips or not. SO!
Dial the unit in so that it *just* distorts and then adjust the compressor to tame the peaks.
My passive JazzV (with tapewound strings) is probably going to react differently than your basses, and you're likely going for a different vibe than I am, but I've used this unit with several instruments and it's really simple for me to dial it in knowing that I can.
I can generally have my input gain set to around 1 o'clock. When I had rounds on there was little difference in gainstructure.
I tend to set my gear up for 'dimmed' volume pots on my bass so I set my WTDI to tame peaks when run full out but for the times when I run full out I'm glad to have that compressor to keep things distortion-free.

I agree with newbold. The key with Eden heads / preamps is to set the gain to where it just barely clips on the loudest note (thumping an "E" hard).Then set your master from there. If you're not getting enough output, then you need a bigger power amp.
It would be nice if there were a clipping LED so you could see when it clips as well as hear it. For setting up at home just hearing is fine, but when setting on the fly in a band situation, that is where the LED would come in handy to me.

I have both Eden and EBS Preamp DI's. I run my Basses through an Uncontained Sound, 1000watt Powered 4x10 Bass cab. I prefer my Roscoe Basses straight into the cabinet because both Preamps color my sound a bit. Both of them sound really nice anytime I've used them. I got the Eden a week or so ago and used it on a show and once I got the vol dialed in the right way, it sounded great. I still like going direct into the cabinet but I have the Eden on my pedal board and the EBS in my bag for back ups..The Eden is a great Pre/Di for live and it's really killer for tracking..
since my last post, I have had chance to reconsider my gain settings.
It's back between 9 and noon with more output. While I don't look here for user settongs I understand that others might and find frustration with clipping.
I don't like the distortion in this circuit when it's there.

Just came from over in the AMPS threads. One TBer posted his gain issues as well. He states he returned 2 new WTDI pedals with those issues and now his 3rd one seems to be working fine as per his previous gain issues. Maybe some of these came out with issues.
I've had mine, bought new online, for about 2.5 weeks. Never had the gain issues. Gigged it once into my Crown Coredrive 1500 amp bypassing the BBE pre but it was just way too fat for the room. This room gave me EQ nightmares before so I pulled it outta chain and just ran the BBE pre, issues got better. But the Epi UL410 prolly didn't help in this room either.
Gonna try the WTDI as pre into my GB Streamer 900 effects return at gig this coming Friday into a GB Neox 212T w/P5. Gig is out on the deck of a popular restaurant shouldn't have the boom issues I had last time.

When I set the gain to a usable level , the output to my monitor is way too low so I'll have to work with my soundman to make some adjustments.
I got rid of my SWR M2 preamp which I am now regretting or at last until I find a sweet spot on the Eden.
I also have a Basswitch IQ DI and an Alembic F2B that I'm going to compare.
If the Alembic had a XLR it would be a wrap.

Heya Kerry, there is a guy Mike Putnam who does mods to pedals. I'll bet he could add a di to your Alembic. Maybe google him?
I was having gain issues too - until I saw a post on the first page of this thread and turned the compressor down. Does anyone know why this would have an impact on the unwanted distorted signal?

I use my comp to tame any grit and then back off the input a tiny bit.
the compressor works better with the unit has more input gain juicing the unit itself.
I suggest turning the input gain up and using the compressor and turning your bass' volume control down.
You'll probably get some great results.
My WTDI is awesome but took some figuring to not get any clipping.

Ok, so yesterday I picked up a BBE Boosta Grande and put it after the WTDI and at the end of my effects chain. It's pushing a lot more signal into the front end of my rack unit for sure than the Eden WTDI on its own.
Next test will be to see how well the Boosta Grande pushes directly into a power amp. Hopefully this is a fix for the WTDI problem!

I just got a WTDI shipped to my house a week ago. Who thinks I should keep it in the box for max resell value? Or should I open it up and give it a shot before deciding to sell it?
May as well open it and give it a try. I dumped mine with no regrets. The thing is way too finicky for my tastes and that is not the kind of thing I want on gigs. Not worth the stress. YMMV. etc.
Hi folks... I think I will buy the WTDI soon, but I have one question: I know it's not phantom powered, but will I damage it if I plug into a mixer with the phantom engaged?
Not sure, I would contact Eden before you do or put a direct box in between the WTDI and the mixer. It should be fine.
I just grabbed one of these on the fly because after constantly wanting to get my hands on a Sansamp, I thought I'd give this a try real fast to see if it was more up my alley. I like clean, smooth, booming lows and punchy mids. I plugged my 6 string with an EMG setup into the pedal, then right into my interface, the WTDI sounds SICK, there's really not a bad tone to be found. But then I pulled out my Aslin Dane 5 string Stringray and it just sounded kind of like it disappeared, so I blamed it on the bass. I switched over to my Spector Legend 5 String and it was back to normal.
This all changed when I got it to band practice though. We practice at stage volume and the thing just seemed to get lost in the mix to me and my guitarist. On it's own, the difference is vast, but in the mix of an entire band the improvement becomes minuscule. I play a TC Electronics head and I just felt like the onboard settings on the TC match what the WTDI has to offer. Also, I know it's called a "preamp" for a reason, but I felt like I was comprising by turning my active on-board bass preamps down to make the Eden usable. If you turn any knob on your bass preamp past 0, you're going to be pushing the Eden too hard.
It might sound a little confusing, you just have to get your hands on one to see. I'm considering keeping it for demos alone(or if I ever switch to a pre-amp/power amp setup), but I don't see any reason to hold onto it now. I've got the Amplitube Ampeg plugin and Studio Devil Bass plugins and this just seems to be overlapping. Sadly, it's going back. But it DEFINITELY makes me want an Eden amp even more. It does sound damn good for recording.
