Egmond Rambler & Typhoon bass projects

I sent Hans another email asking about the marbled finishes and in his return email I got the impression he didn't know. He just said it was probably a factory finish, which wouldn't rule out an accordion plastic covering. There just doesn't seem to be much information on this brand.

Marble finishes!

The phrase instantly makes me think of the fabled Coral Electric Sitar with its pebble finish. I know…they ARE different from each other, but I still connect the two finish types together. The pebble finish is 3-D and adds so much to the mystique of those rare guitars. (I have the Jerry Jones re-issue that faithfully replicates that pebble finish.)

Ok…back to your business, JIO and friends!

Yes, the look is called craquelure. Craquelure - Wikipedia It's a Decorative Arts technique that stemmed from canvas paintings/picture frames and furniture to create an aged look. I incorporated it on my '68 Silvertone (Dano) 1443 Hornet bass -

Exactly!!!!

Here is an ad for a Danelectro that shows they are going for the original look as well (I did not know they had a version out currently).

I love the way it sounds. Here's a few '60s Dano's with that finish - mostly red/black. Any two colors can be used - I may end up doing that on the Rambler.

...they also did a mono-colour version - pretty cool actually, more about texture.

Your interest in these finishes makes perfect sense. You and plain paint jobs? Yeah…NO! If it is JIO, we all know there will be an interesting, multi-step finish involved.

You are the Finish Whisperer!

Ha! I do like a 'plain' paint job/finish where it fits best - but I am also always drawn to something that fits in a different way. And not always from my hand - Pat Wilkins landed this awesome finish under my direction for my Meazzi inspired Juniper med-scale bass. It wasn't what I initially envisioned, but it was exactly what I wanted! "Your Guitar Should Dress Like a Star" - I still believe that after 10+yrs!

So in 1975 my older brother wanted to play bass, and our dad had a friend who lent us a proper Hofner violin bass for a few weeks. After that, dad found the exact same green Egmond for sale somewhere, same headstock shape like in the picture. We never knew it was called a Rambler, but there you go. My brother and I cut our teeth on it, then at some point the body got swapped for a homebrew dual cutaway job with go-faster stripes, and that old body must be sitting in my parents' attic.
I remember the green finish is matt and has a slightly rough texture. In hindsight, it must have been a regular shortscale, I don't think it was under 30" but I can't be sure. We had Pyramid Gold flats on it.

Awesome! Thanks for your response/story - so cool! Still gathering info on this bass - I have no idea if the green bass was earlier or later than the one I have (I'm guessing it had the Vox-like paddle hs shape, but mostly because I like it better than the "Fender-esk" version). The faded salmon/orange finish I stripped off of mine confirms your recollection of it being matte and textured. Definitely not shiny like a Fender etc. I'm gleaning my knowledge about it's scale from Hans (who has a web-page on Egmond) who said it was 28" scale. Maybe they did something longer later (?) ... I just don't know at this point.

So... another ragged orphan from Holland in need of some TLC. Original HSC is also included (bonus!) but... it's missing the bridge, which will be difficult to find an original from the '60s. I did an initial search and came up empty handed. I did find a Ric 4005 bridge which should suffice, so I just ordered it.

Here's an example of the same model. A two post metal bridge w/a flat bridge cover. The Ric bridge looks close enough. Also shows a textured finish which aligns with my consideration of a craquelure finish.

Wow, the electronics are in fantastic shape, super clean and looking all original.

Yes, many reasons to take it on. Mostly cosmetic fixes far as I can tell. The back of the neck (which the seller assured was straight) has a pretty substantial boo-boo but I'll be refinishing it anyway. I'll know more once it arrives.

Here's a pristine example on Reverb - Fiesta Red looks like very good choice - Egmond Typhoon 2EBS1 JAGUAR 1969s - Red | Reverb Being a 34"scale bass, I may run into a problem finding strings long enough as there is a lot of real estate between the bridge and the stop.

Are you gonna reshape the broken corners of the pickguard? It's a shame cause it's really clean too. I don't know if you could get away with reshaping, plug the holes in the body and make new one for the slightly smaller pickguard horns. If not, at least it's a pretty common color and pattern, though modern stuff just doesn't look quite the same.

Showing the metal bridge w/o cover. And more on Egmond - www.Egmond.se - they were also know for wacky vinyl wrapped bodies. This Fiesta red example was missing the bridge pu so the owner replaced it with a soap-bar pu.

I won't reshape but instead will replace/fill in and attempt to blend in. I've got some ideas. I mean, it's luckily pretty minor. Oh no - I doubt this type of MoP is available as far as I know. It was a big selling point as it's like '60s vintage tort - it just isn't commonly available like this anymore. I'll send out the "Bat Signal" to someone versed in this type of MoP - @Dynacord

Neck scar looks like a vinyl/nitro reaction.
Is the "T" binding metal?

Rick

We'll see once it arrives. I was told it's a bit deeper than just clear-coat. Not sure about the binding. It appears to be something I can find made of 'silver' flexible plastic.

A better pic of the metal bridge & cover. This example is a different model or version of the Typhoon. Van Gent tuners but all metal unlike the plastic paddle version.

Different controls, pg & body shape but otherwise pretty much the same. This one is listed as 30" scale but I'm pretty sure mine is 34" like the Rambler.

Woh! Vintage imitation alligator! :woot: A bit beat up but everything intact and only a bit musty smelling. Once it stops raining here I'll get it outside for some UV rays.
upload_2024-2-16_15-0-32.jpeg

Definitely the OHSC - this is a 30" short-scale but like my Teisco Del Rey, 46.5" long, longer than a Jazz bass.
upload_2024-2-16_15-3-29.jpeg

Cool little latch for the accessory compartment. Nail's added later - probably to wind a neck restraint string around.
upload_2024-2-16_15-5-3.jpeg

Headstock MoP layer is potato-chipped but in good condition otherwise. Careful heating and re-gluing will get it in line. Original screened Egmond script being intact is bonus.
upload_2024-2-16_15-6-52.jpeg

As is common for plastic over 50yrs old, shrinkage has occurred leading to missing flanges. As I will be refinishing it, old holes will be filled and new holes will be drilled to accommodate.
upload_2024-2-16_15-9-41.jpeg

Love the white sorta' chicken-head pointer knob and big black indents for stops. Three new screw holes need to be relocated.
upload_2024-2-16_15-11-49.jpeg

This is something I wasn't anticipating although it's clearly photographed in my post #49 - as in - it's semi hollow! (and multi-laminate!)
upload_2024-2-16_15-14-31.jpeg

And yes... some sort of silver plastic T-strip. This is the only place it's been compromised (not sure why) Part of the mysteries of vintage basses!
upload_2024-2-16_15-15-55.jpeg

Weighed it w/o bridge & strings and it's 7lbs/2oz - light!
upload_2024-2-16_16-51-34.jpeg

ATC - this is a perfect example of a Geo project. It's going to be awesome! :bassist:
