EH Bassballs users...

that is normal. one of the functions of the Knob is to control volume, but only when the distortion switch is on. otherwise, the Knob acts as a sensitivity control and that's it.

i tend to keep my bassballs dialed in at around 10:00 - 11:00 (pretty much in line with the screw situated above the distortion switch), whether the switch is up or down.

i don't use it all the time (the band i'm in now is "straight ahead," as it were... i'm more concerned about one or two good tones, so only end up using a few pedals. i keep the others on my board because....... i love them so!), but it definitely helps add a little flavor... like salt: use sparingly for best results. a little goes a long way.

quite a memorable effect, though.

(ohbytheway, matt till: with the distortion off, it is quite subtle. i like the subtlety, though...... just keep tweaking, and have fun!)

mess around with the sensitivity dial and if it still doesn't do anything than it's either broken or not turned on (battery dead).


also. i own a bassballs and love it. great little pedal.

I'm a recent Bassballs user. it's a great pedal, but it needs some tweaking...

here is mine (well, in fact it's my girlfriend's...), after I modified it :

I just put the 2 trimpots externally.

I use it for synth-like sounds. It just sounds great. With a clean boost before it, it is.... oh yeah, baby... :bassist:

Could you post some clips that display the trimpot mods? I have a russian bassballs and would interested in the external trimpot mod if it gave a bit more variety in the pedal.

In fact this mod gives so many possibilities than I allready forgot how it sounded when it was new.

I made some soundclips. They are poor, but demonstrate taht this unit can go further than allows the simple Sens pot.

For tons of fun,

I cascade a Russian BB (Distortion on, set to about 9 o'clock) into a USA BB (Distortion off, set to noon)

It's the DOH! sound... So very Homeric.

Bassytra, what value pots did you replace the trims with? I might attempt that mod (or have it done for me) on one or both of them.

Same as the trimpots. Doesn't that make sense ? :)

In fact pots are 5k and there is a 4k7 resistor to ground in serie with it. I replaced this with a single 10k pot. This way I can set the filters lower in frequency.

I think about replace finger-switch of distrotion by foot-switch it could be more usable in action.....
Im really interested in your MOD can you tell us more about function of those 2 pots and show us some kind of scheme.....

Here's a link to a mod I use when I have trouble with pedals that have too much or too little low end. It's simply a Big Muff Tone Control that you stick on the end of the circuit before it goes to the output jack.

There are 2 internal trimpots, which control how much the envellope detector stage drives the 2 filters. One for treble filter, one for bass one (they don't really are "treble" or "bass" filters, more "band" filters, but one it lower than the other).

Plus, there is a serial resistor to ground, which means that even when set to minimum, the filters are driven by the detector stage.

I put those pots externally, and removed the resistors. So, with both pots to min, the filters don't move (only low end come out). With pots to max, the filters move high quickly.

I use them principally with distortion, Sens (which is also the gain of the distortion) to max, to EQ my sound.

A schematic isn't really usefull. Just remove the two trimpots and wire a "real" pot where they were wired. If you want to remove the serial resistor, just search the resistor between one of the end (it's not on the wiper) ot the trimpots and ground, and connect this end of the "real" pot directly to ground.

If I'm not clear enough (which I may be, sorry... ), I think you'd better ask on diystompboxes.com ;)
