Double Bass Ehrlund "Sweet Spot", anyone?

My EAP arrived. Sounds great. So I'm geeking out technical insights and found this video. It's about Ehrlund microphones, which apparently have triangular capsules (?). The EAP is triangular, but contact derived so I suppose the same principles apply. After watching this, the implication is that all round capsules don't sound as clear as the Ehrlund mics. I hardly think it's that bleak (else I've wasted a lot of money on nice mics!!). But worth a watch if you're into this stuff....

The Highrisers frequency content might get clearer with a triangular membrane, but the triangle needs to be larger than the circle of a traditional mic to get a comparable result.
It might not be completely transferable to the EAP pickup, because (AFAIK) the membrane is fixed at the corners only, not the edges/circumfence as with the circular membrane of a mic. The demonstrations (water) also show fixed edges, not fixed corners.
I have no real idea what will be the difference in the effect of fixed edges vs. fixed corners, but there will be a major difference.

Damping the self-oscillation of a membrane is a good thing, but don‘t forget that the speaker membrane(s) will resonate too, so playing back the captured signal will always change the phase charactristic. And EQ does change it too.
So the better phase might get destroyed if you need more EQ for a good sound.

That‘s at least one of the reasons why one should choose the mic that sounds best with neutral EQ which doesn’t need to be the most expensive one.

The Ehrlund Microphones have a much larger triangular membrane than the EAP, but as far as neutral EQ goes, on my bass the EAP is nearly even throughout the entire frequency spectrum of the instrument ,so there is an advantage using that triangle design on my Mirecourt 5/8's Bass.

I own one of the EHR-M large-diaphragm mics and use it in my home studio. I'm not quite geeky enough to chase down frequencies and compare to other mics I have, but I know it sounds damned good on vocals.

Been playing a lot more arco lately, both studying the German bow videos from David A Moore and Rabbaths Art of the Bow. I realized that I had a very nice french bow that came with an American Standard bass I traded some photography for a few years ago. I have a Prowchonik German which is what I have played mostly but this Rud Ringer french is really quite nice. I want the EAP because I sold mine before I got this smaller bass and it might work nicely. Also someone mentioned that the EAP sounds great run thru a Tube buffer so I want to try that.
...I guess I forgot to mention, it always helps to ask here, someone local just offered me with an EAP so I will discover soon. I sold my EAP (I bought one when they first came out)...It didn't really work for me on my old Tyrolean 7/8, amd I remember the cable being microphonic...but all that was before MAS, Felix, and Sarno and the Andrea Spada Contrabassetto.

I’m super pleased with the sound of EAP through a Noble tube preamp. Incomparably better than a Gage Lifeline through the Noble. You’d be fine leaving the mic home with the EAP / Noble combination.

Also true of the Ehrlund EAP with a Grace Designs Felix, Headway EDB-2, and Sarno Black Box, in my experience.

David Allen Moore is the shizz, are you doing his courses on Discover Double Bass or his book? The way I avoided the microphonic qualities of the EAP's cable was to shorten it enough that it did not touch the top and use one of those plastic pipe clamps with a 1/4" Rapco phone jack

I thought the EAP had been updated to reduce/eliminate the problem with the microphonic cable?

Yeah David has the videos (fractal fingering is frickin awesome) the German bow videos too. He has a way of development that is really good (you have to stop and do each exercise for a few weeks...at least I do)...I dont have the book. He also has this really cool Fractal fridays zoom meeting where he essentially just gives free zoom lessons to whoever shows up....really digging those.
Back to EAP does it use the 12 v phantom off the Felix or the 48v? I am not sure it uses any...I cant remember....I didnt buy the preamp...

My Headway EDB2H.E provides gain and granular EQ if needed. The Noble adds tube signal processing. It’s the tube that helps make the EAP even better.

I'll be sure to check that out, I guess the Los Angles Symphony isn't back in the Disney just yet. David also studied with John Clayton for a time, so he knows what Jazz is. You'll be fine just running the EAP into your Grace or you can try the

Octal V8 and see what that does. It loves the Sarno Black Box into the Grace.

Part of the reason I'm interested in this again is, I never really understood what is happening with this pickup. When it first came out and I bought one, there was some slight of hand saying it was not a piezo but some other kind of contact mic, then public sentiment seemed to agree it is a piezo. But is it just so thin that the vibrating plastic cover is transferring the sound or is it that the three corners are nodes and the sound pressure itself is pushing thru the plastic and moving the piezo, or is it something else? Just kind of curious to know what is actually going on. Has anyone seen the insides of one?
