Electric car as power source?

….depending on how far it is to get home. The range of an unladen Lightning on a FULL charge is about 260 miles, unless pulling a trailer near its towing capacity; then the range is a two digit number that Ford won’t reveal. So, if it powered the gig & has to haul gear & musicians home, it would best if was a very local gig.

It is still very capable of powering a band and lights, unless it’s a Pink Floyd concert.

But maybe Pink Ford?

EV’s are not now a perfected technology. In the future they will be. I really do not recommend tinkering at this time. The world’s navies have a great deal of experience with large, powerful batteries and not all of it is good. Just my thought.

I wasn't thinking my bass could double as a rail gun or a laser weapon, but that would be awesome.

I would he curious as to the scenario that would necessitate this?

It came to mind as a confluence of thoughts. The first is the difficulties I've had using generators, and the second was a recent event where one of those Halo electric power supplies saved the day when my iPad lost power on a sound reinforcement gig. If there could be a battery powered solution that would replace a generator for high load but short duration things, it might be a good thing.

The fact that electric vehicles don't have some means to do that frustrates me at least as much as gas powered tools like riding lawnmowers, pressure washers and the like don't have a power takeoff to expand the use of the engine to additional purposes, such as driving a generator.
 
About 17 minutes at maximum current draw, although it will probably catch fire after 12. The battery production will result in environmental damage and human rights abuse, and - not being recyclable - will leave an environmental problem for future generations to solve on a similar scale to nuclear waste. Of course your electric car may be powered by electricity from biofuel power stations, with biofuel production resulting in yet more environmental destruction and possibly even including woodchip from illegal rainforest deforestation. Buy hey it's all green :)

Glad you brought that up. It's the elephant in the room. The English are patting themselves on the back being green because they no longer burn coal to fuel their electric plants. They burn old growth wood from Eastern Europe.

And we are building new biofuel power stations here. Biofuels are one of the biggest environmental scams going at the moment, but because of the word "bio" and it's not fossil fuels people are falling for it. Not green.

In case we are being vague. Where is the electricity going to come from for all of the new electric cars? Just getting an EV doesn't get us to a green life. Is the EV future an exercise in "looks good, feels good?" No actual impact on carbon emissions but politicians can pat their backs. Folks who can afford EVs feel great at cocktail parties. :)

EVs may well be the way of the future but until they can solve all the issues with lithium batteries and guarantee that the power they are using is clean and green, they are not quite the panacea they appear to be.

That reminds me of the early 2000's when Gray Davis was the governor of California. They hadn't built any new electrical power plants in California for years, and the power shortages got so bad that they had rolling brownouts, earning said governor the nickname "Grayout Davis". But the power shortages didn't stop the California state government from passing a requirement that by the year [whatever it was], 10% of all cars sold in California would be electric cars. I asked exactly the same question you did.

I started to wonder if there was a single sane person left in the entire state.

Assuming an electric car has the ability to output AC power you might be surprised. I work at Storyteller Overland and we build off-road RVs on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis. Our vans feature a 12kWh lithium battery instead of a generator to power the A/C and what not while the van is parked. It is essentially the same battery you would find in a electric car. Several musicians have bought our units to tour in and they frequently use the battery to power their equipment for shows. It will run a full P.A. and amplifiers for hours. This is easy with our vans as they have 120VAC outlets all over them. I assume you would need a junction box for a electric car.

HAHAHA.... I hate to even tell you. They start at 150K and go up to 200K. Believe it or not there is currently a 2 year waiting list for them and we build 12 a week. They are very popular with people in the tech industry who can work from home via the internet. Imagine being set up in a national park for a week while writing software the entire time from the comfort of your camper van.

Electric cars aren't the panacea if we are burning fossil fuels to generate electricity. The Cadmium. You send your kids down in those mines. Are those mines in your neighborhood? The storage of waste batteries. Right now the cost of replacing a battery in a used Prius is $8000. I'm saying we have to work this out with all the facts and reason.

My daughter worked for a famous wall street firm. She did a study that showed that a Range Rover was greener than a Prius, cradle to grave. Shocked? I was. The take away? The Prius plant assemblers commute 30 miles a day. The Rover plant? They walk and ride bikes. Over the life of the car the impact globally is less from the Rover even with it's lesser MPG.

In West Africa they banned single use plastic. Saves the planet right? Thousands of women were purifying tap water and selling it in plastic bladders. Now they have no income and people are left with poor quality drinking water. Unintended consequence. Haiti was hit with an earthquake and the storm you know. Americans raised huge money and rice was shipped to the ports there. The women who raise rice in Haiti could not sell their rice because there was free rice at the port. These women could not support their families or have investment to make in next year's harvest.

My point? We hurt people today while we make a better tomorrow as an ideology. No common sense. "We" don't suffer the consequences of these grand ideas. (I'm am pro green)

Sources? That Prius story has been debunked and is based out dated supply lines and technology. Sure mining is dirty and China owns the bulk of the metals we need for these new technologies, but the idea that we should just keep doing what we've been doing is lame. Your post is harmful despite your throwaway statement that you are pro-green.
