Electric Cigarettes

I have a friend who works at the FDA. It's not what you would expect. They are a tiny agency with a huge range of responsibility. They challenged some E-cig companies (like it said in the posted articles) because they were offering drugs/medicine without required governmental approval. I don't see how they are in bed with the tobacco companies because they are doing what they are supposed to be doing.

I am enjoying this thread a lot, thanks for reporting your experiences Uribam. Here's to freedom (both in civil rights and from addictions). :hyper:

Why did Minnesota make them illegal?

A lot of laws are founded on very good & valid reasons. Not all, though.

Not exactly sure why... but my friend who works at a local head shop used the e-cigs when we were in the studio awhile ago. Here's what he had to say...

Apparently it had to do with selling them before the FDA had a chance to evaluate them. I'm not sure about the actual laws, but they can't sell them at the shops anymore. I guess if you are using them the police can treat them the same as paraphinalia and can give you a ticket for using them. Stupid IMO.

FDA has been criticized countless times not because employing (which may be about limited funding) not enough people to the point of not being able to do their jobs well enough, but because most - if not all - of their decisions have been in support of big pharma; an industry of which its actions should be overseen and regulated by FDA for the good of the public. This is not even a conspiracy theory anymore when people say FDA does what pharmaceutical companies tell them to do. So sad and discouraging...

That FDA text is a speculation at best and "any" person who knows "a little bit" about US politics would easily figure out what that report was all about. They are allowed to challenge, in fact that's their job. But their non-scientific press release (I can't bring myself to call it a report twice) seems to be aimed at influencing public opinion and making regular cigarettes seem like less dangerous than e-cigarettes. On top of that, if they have real concerns, this is not the way to address them. I think they should be sued for that. That's why people commented on FDA being in bed with tobacco companies (over which they very recently gained power).

I am sure your friend is a great guy and a hard-working American. This post is about FDA and the policy makers of the said federal agency, so I mean no disrespect to that person or you. I do also believe the freedom of choice and government shouldn't be controlling anything of this sort unless you are hurting anybody else. Should they campaign against it and educate people? A big yes.

Well I've found the lost one, but the other atomizer went bad, I think. I took a drag and got the liquid on my tongue, it was disgusting. When I called customer service he told me I was sucking too hard, so I said ok I'll try what you said. It didn't work so I have a support e-mail out to them now. I stopped using them for the time being until they respond. The situation is quite disappointing. Hopefully their customer service is as great this time as it was when I ordered.

Yeah the weight is weird. Putting the battery on the far end just seems like a bad idea maybe. I'm sure it'll work out, they seem to be a good company. Just waiting for an email back to see about replacing what's broken. Good or bad, you'll hear what happens.

The E 901 mini seems to be holding up fairly well. I ordered mine from myvaporstore.com. Very reasonable prices and quick shipping. My current goal is to be off regular cigs by October. I find the e cigs to not be as satisfying as regular smokes, but with a bit of effort on my part, I think it's a goal I can achieve. BTW, my doc says that you are still getting carcinogens from the e cigs. I don't know if thats true or just some slanted review he's read, but you are definitely cutting out the tar and the host of other chemicals that regular cigs have.

One other thing that is very noteworthy, my wife suffers from asthma. She can't be around cig smoke at all, sets off an attack. We tried an experiment in the car recently. With windows closed, we drove for about half an hour with me puffing away on the e cig. She had no negative reaction to it at all. It would seem that even if it isn't as healthy an alternative to the smoker as it is touted to be, at least it is MUCH easier on those that are around you. Something that is definitely worth considering.

Clearly, these things would be drug delivery systems, and that is EXACTLY the sort of thing the FDA gets excited about.

If a device like this can keep the stink off of my clothes (and my lungs) at a gig, that'd be great... But I just don't see them catching on; Part of smoking seems to be the social/communal aspect - I've been out with smokers who, if no one ELSE is smoking, they won't smoke... but the second one guy lites up...

I guess folks would do the same with the electro-butts, but it just seems different. I, for one, wish that Pharma could come up with a drug that supressed the urge for nicotine - Make quitting easy for everyone... that'd be MY perfect solution.

+1

That made me wonder as well, it shouldn't be that hard. They created successful drugs for all kinds of hormonal irregularities and neurotransmitter problems except for dopamine.

Chantix is a nicotine blocker. It binds to Dopamine receptors in the brain and blocks nicotine from binding to those receptors. It is NOT a perfect solution (even though it worked for me). There are potential negative side effects, which include increased depression and possible thoughts of suicide. Some people have committed suicide while on Chantix. The warning label recommends against prescribing to teens and/or patients with severe/moderate depression. It is available only through prescription and requires the supervision of a physician.

The e-cigarette, to me, is a viable alternative for people who are currently tobacco cigarette/cigar smokers who wish to eliminate the harmful effects of particulates and tars found in traditional tobacco products. Elimination of these harmful tobacco byproducts is a major step forward to preventing cancer and/or emphysema.

The main opponents of e-cigarettes want to regulate or ban them to keep people from looking at e-cigarettes as a "safe alternative" when deciding to start smoking. I have a hard time buying into that premise (as a former cigarette smoker of over 30 years). It kind of reminds me of the crazy notion that cigarette-shaped candy will lead to cigarette smoking later in life (absolutely bizarre logic IMLO :hmm:).
