EMG or Seymour or WHAT???

Heres the deal folks!!!!

I'm hoping you could all chime in here and help me with a problem I have.

I own a Gibson V bass. It is a 1981 silver burst in VERY nice shape. The only non original part is a Bad Ass bridge installed on it from day one by the original owner. I am the second owner.

The pick-ups are no longer producing any output.

I don't have many alternative here as the pick-up are epoxy sealed and can not be re-wound.

There is a replacement pick-up available from Seymour Duncan that fits the Gibson Ripper basses and if I could have it modified to affix mounting clips to it, I could install it through the screw holes that are on the V's pick guard. This is ideal as there are zero modifications to the bass it's self.

Another alternative is to use the original Gibson plastic shroud on the factory pick-ups and install an EMG underneath it. Problem is where the old pole piece where on the original pick-up, the holes would reveal the EMG casing underneath.

What would you do???

I'm looking to maintain authentic aesthetics primarily. Sonic fidelity is secondary.

First things first: have you checked all the wiring, pots, output jack? Having two pickups short out is practically unheard of unless the instrument was subject so some sort of radical impact. First and foremost, verify everything with a meter.

If the pickups are in fact shorted, a pickup winder like Aero or Nordstrand or Bartolini can wind pickups with custom covers to fit your bass. You would just need to specify what kind of pickup you want underneath. You'll probably end up with a better sounding bass too.
