Envelope Filter Survey

I have these

MXR Bass Auto Q
EHX Micro Q tron
DOD FX25B
EHX Bassballs
Digitech Bass Synth Wah

out of those, I like the DOD FX25B the most. but I know there are others I'd like to try, such as an original Mutron, EHX QTron, and Qtron+, EHX Micro Synth, akai deep impact synth, Korg G5.

The Micro Synth's filter isn't really envelope-following, it's a triggered sweep from one pre-set frequency to another. The G5's filter used on its own is totally underwhelming. The Q-Tron is a nice filter for funk stuff.

Well it appears that several of these pedals have been discontinued.

- Meatball
- Menetone Mail Bomb
- Boomstick Bottomfeeder

I should have the Groove Regulator in today's mail. I'm really looking forward to that. Oh and the EP-1 should be here today also.

I was just looking at the owner's manual for the EP-1. It looks like the power supply requirements are for 12vac. That's kind of a drag.

I don't think they're discontinuing it though it no longer appears under the "Boomstick" name so I wonder if the plan to build other bass effects has gone by the wayside.

Still, you can find it under "Mojo Hand" as the Analogue Filter Red. Same pedal.

I liked the Robotalk a lot with fretless. Did you see the video with Larry Kimpel? It's pretty easy to get that tone. But there's a vide with Oscar Cartaya where he has it set up for a quackier, wetter sound (frequency knob close to maxed) and it will definitely lose low end when set up that way.

In that case a blender is necessary. The sample & hold also benefits from a blender (or a biamped rig) to let some clean underneath. Octaver, blender and Robotalk in "arpeggiator" mode is still one of my favorite sounds.

But just as a straight filter, I liked it a lot. Dry sounding and aggressive, it cut through well. On a fretless it gets a pretty synthy sound.

The Robotalk II has DIP switches that can be set specifcially for use with Bass so you don't lose low end...There is a second DIP switch that can be set for different PUP configurations (ie active, passive)...I'm not sure if the Robotalk I had these switches or not...

Big O...can you elaborate and let us know if the older one had these??

I don't believe so. In fact, I'm pretty certain it didn't, but I don't want to say absolutely because I no longer have the pedal to check.

My understanding was that adding these to the new version was done to avoid having to sell separate guitar and bass versions that were hardwired. That's what they did with the original version.

Mine was the bass version and I wouldn't have bought it if I intended to use it with guitar as well. My guitarist (who has a fairly hot Les Paul) had trouble getting it to trigger.

Though I play all active basses, I tried it with a passive and had no problems. The sensitivity range is pretty wide.

The new one looks really nice, but honestly the reason I bought mine was that I was told the new version wouldn't have S&H capabilities which was a big part of why I wanted it.

Fuzz into the Robotalk set on "arpeggiator" is a fantastic sound and one of the reasons I kept it over the Prometheus.

I use a Moog LPF now and love it. I shielded the inside of it with copper foil and that made a difference in hiss and radio frequencies I would pick up....but the pedal is about as versatile as they come...I haven't used the expression pedal with it as much, b/c I haven't used the Moog in a live setting...but as far as tone....wow.[/QUOTE]

Sleepy, Id love to play with your moog one day.lol. I love the fx25, but it just doesnt work in a band setting. It sounds good when playing alone, but doesnt cut through a mix.

I'm an Xotic dealer- my shipment of the new Robotalks came in about 2 weeks ago- I can't say enough good things about them. Huge for me was the ability (via the internal dip switches) to control input sensitivity. I also like being able to set different envelope frequencies for the dual filters, although I think the ability to do that on the fly would be useful (currently another internal dip switch setting).
