Envelope Filter Survey

I picked up a EBS Bass IQ last night. So now I have that and the digitech bass synth wah.. I think I might also get a used fx 25 and do a comparison. Anyone a huge fan of the EBS? Its got a real sweet nice sound, but I'd like it a hair more responsive sorta like the DOD fx25 in the auto wah setting.

I'm thinking that of all the filter pedals I've tried my issue has been a sensitivity problem (my problem not necessarily the pedals fault).

It seems that you have tag them pretty hard to get them to open up. I was just listening to some samples on the Bassfuzz website for the Bottom Feeder. Grygrx, thank you for a great resource, but, all of the samples were done with slapping or a pick. I don't hardly slap or play with a pick. (Please don't get me wrong as I am very grateful for all of Grygrx efforts. I've spent a lot of time on his site exploring.)

I'm looking for a filter that is sensitive for fingerstyle playing. I got the Pigtronix EP-1 yesterday and still have to spend more time with it AND the manual. But it too seemed as though I had to get aggressive with it to open the filter (follower). I was using a Sadowsky and I found that the best tone came with the bass in the passive mode. Like I said I do need to spend more time with the EP-1. And I'll try some other basses.

With the EP-1, you should be able to get it to open without aggressive playing. You probably already know this, but if you turn the sweep knob up until it is right on the verge of lighting up the EF/LFO LED and then crank the sensitivity, it should take little effort on your part to trigger the filter.

But of course, the big thing with filters is to respond to a range of dynamics so most ARE set to only fully trigger when pegged relatively hard.

Hope that helps.

TBO, thank you for the tips. I really sat down and worked my way through the manual. The knob functions do get a bit confusing but I was able to get the filter to trigger with a less aggressive touch. It turned out to be a fun pedal but I will have to spend more time with it to figure out what works. Plus I need to look into that Marv mod.

I've been a bad boy lately...as I am spending my tax return before it gets here in my hot little hands. I bought a 3Leaf Groove Regulator and it arrived today. All can I say it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. It just worked with about 2 seconds of fiddling. Plus it didn't seem to mind whether I had my Sadowsky in active or passive. It sounded great both ways. It triggered the filter with a light touch or I could dial it to wait until I dug in. I only got about 20 minutes with it but I knew right away that it was a keeper.

And this morning, for some odd reason, I was thinking that I should start looking for a Boomstick Bottomfeeder and one showed up in the classifieds so I snagged that. Gosh if anything that pedal has great graphics. But not as cool as the one on the Mail Bomb.

The Subdecay Prometheus, WMD Fatman and 3Leaf Groove Regulator are the filters I'm looking into.

The exact same three I'm looking at right now too.

I love my Emma, but wanted something a little more versatile and crazy sounding (you synth guys are getting the better of me ;))

I just received the Fatman tonight and it's an interesting little box, only tried it for about an hour so far but got some very usable and funky sounds out of it.

The Prometheus is next on the chopping block and should be getting it in about a week or so. Going to have to play them side by side.

Keep me posted. I've held off buying a filter. I'm going to try a shot at building a Meatball clone first. I'm more into psych/space rock than funk so the Prometheus is high on the list.

I used to have the FX25 and didn't like it at all...for some reason I could never get a decent sound out of it....but people rave about it...so maybe it was just me.

I use a Moog LPF now and love it. I shielded the inside of it with copper foil and that made a difference in hiss and radio frequencies I would pick up....but the pedal is about as versatile as they come...I haven't used the expression pedal with it as much, b/c I haven't used the Moog in a live setting...but as far as tone....wow.

I think the one caveat with this pedal is its sensitivity to input strength.
I find I have to tune my input level to what it is that I want plus what bass is plugged in at the moment. This same feature makes it very responsive though and thus expressive if you can get used to it. i sometimes yearn for a unit that is a bit more forgiving but not enough to trade or carry another one around.

So I've had my BASS IQ for a week now and I had a problem with it. Its very strange.

I had it hooked up to my small practice amp with AC supplied by a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus (battery still inside the pedal) and it worked great.

However when I took it to band practice and ran it through my real rig (same power and pedalboard setup) i noticed something weird... when i would hit the high notes (slapping) the pedal started randomly sweeping way down, almost inaudible. I took the pedal apart, removed the battery and hooked it back up to the AC... worked fine.... FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES! then back to the same problem.

So I don't know what happened to the pedal... it randomly has this problem and at times it works fine.

I'm dumfounded. ;/

I just had to add... (before anyone suggests this)... it is not a technique issue. I know how hard you hit the strings effects this pedal and the way it works. I have consistently been hitting those high notes in the same way.. I know because I am using this pedal for one song in particular.

Anyway, when I first got the pedal I had the "Attack" knob set at 25%, then went dead, then sorta worked at 0% (odd), and then dead.
