The way the switchable channels work is if you have 2 basses plugged in, those channels are now dedicated to those basses, when you have 1 bass plugged in, the channels are now switchable.

No tube section, but you'd think it did.

Ch 1 and 2 basically are two different eq's.
Ch 1 has a mid cut button (great for slapping)
Ch 2 has a mid-level control, parametric freq. control and a treble shift button.

I wouldn't say it has an overdrive like you'd get out overdriving a tube amp sound, but you could (wouldn't want to personally) plug an active bass into the passive ch and crack up the gain.

i just pulled the trigger on one of these; i've never played through or heard one other than basstasters and i didn't want to miss out on what seems to be a great deal! i saw on a review that its got good articulation with a nice mids; but does it have any of the demeter's shimmer? i bought it with my fingers crossed in hopes of it being "open" like the demter but a bit thicker overall..... any opinions or direct comparisons?

It is not as open and airy on the high end, though I would say it is roughly equivalent in the articulation category. It has a definite sweetness to the tone, and the overall sound is smooth and slightly dark (but not entirely). It has thickness, but still a sense of speed. I do not consider it to be an entirely flat or transparent preamp (it has its own voice), but it is quite musical, I think, and you never feel like you are missing anything (it's plenty full, plenty clear, plenty articulate, plenty punchy, etc.). It does have some tube like characteristics to the tone, I'd say, and again, it sounds really good. But I can guarantee you that blindfolded and drunk, you could still differentiate the Quest from a 201s with ease. They're not leagues apart, but they each have their own sonic footprint.

Again, this is a stupid good preamp for this price! Heck, it's a top contender in the sub $1,000 category, I'd say.

Thanks for the explanation, that's actually a very useful way to do it I think.

If they have any by payday, then I may have to gettie me one.

No, seriously, what is your question? Are you wondering if the output is hot enough for low input gain type amps, like the PLX series? I didn't get a chance to try that before, but I can try and play it through my PLX 3002 when it comes in. But I would expect that it would do just fine (I never had a problem with any preamps not being hot enough to drive my PLX).

in terms of the high end, has that woody rounded feel, that IMHO, is the hallmark of the Epifani sound. at home sounds sweet. on gig, it sits soooooooo nice.

It doesn't do an overdriven tone, but I think that it does do what I would call a good clean rock and roll tone. I play a mix of rock, and with an overdrive pedal (as needed), it would be great for me.

Tom, speaking of overdrive, seeing as you've got all these fancy amazing tube heads now, feel like getting rid of that Fulltone BassDrive? I mean, it doesn't really do anything that the Sadowsky, Trace, and Traynor can't, does it? ;)
