Epifani web page cabinet compatability warning.

I can't see that Epifani can be talking about Markbass amps.

Peter Murray has stated in another thread that he's never heard of a blown Markbass speaker. If MB heads were the culprit they'd be blowing MB speakers too.

Raises questions to me about Epi speaker durability.

We're missing a statistic here. They say that less than two percent of the blown drivers they see are from people using Epifani heads. Well, what percent of people who use Epifani cabs are using Epifani heads? Two percent? Three, four? If it's that low, there is no statisitcal difference between drivers blown by users of Epifani heads or other heads.

The great thing about companies like Genz-Benz, Dr. Bass, and Markbass is that they have product managers, who chime into these threads and EXPLAIN to us what is going on. Even on weekends:) Lot's of times the owners themselves will respond:cool:.

I'm really surprised that nobody from Epifani has chimed in yet?

I doubt it. Epifani would be very unpopular (lawsuit, maybe?) if they did something like that.

Epifani has a great reputation which they will under no circumstances want to ruin. I think the notice was posted out of concern rather than out of personal greed.

Does Epifani really need sketchy marketing ploys to sell amps? I'm not in a position to give an absolute evaluation, but I do believe that no, that is not the case.

After reading this thread, I think I'm going to eat my words. :smug:

Good lord, 85 posts and no one has blown a speaker yet?!

;)
Yee haw, this should be a good ride! FWIW, I've been powering a UL410 & UL210 with an SD800, GB Neo-Pak, LMKII and now an AI Focus SA....with no problems. I HAVE made the AI kinda fart out because it doesn't seem to have a limiter. It made a sound that didn't seem very "driver-friendly", so I backed off. It was VERY loud at that point.

As far as "many people in this community" statement I only have read Bill F's statements and don't see a list of those with scientific expertise responding to the issue one way or the other.

I don't want to be conspicous by our absence but, since we've been mentioned in this thread a couple of times I will say that it is my/our stance not to take one side or another in a thread involving a competitor.

We're not ducking it.....just can't figure out a proper or ethical way to weigh in.

So if a thread pops up that someone doesn't agree with we should just close it automatically? What ever happened to discussion, as long as no one is flaming, why not? At least this isn't pointless like the BAN WAR thread that FINALLY is getting closed.

This is a SPECIFIC concern with a SPECIFIC manufacturer that they posted a bulletin on their website.

Man this site never ceases to amaze me now, day after day. It never used to be this sterile.

Thank You! I have wanted to say that for 3 years......say the wrong thing, BOOM!!!!

What the hell ever happened to "DISCUSSION"!?!?!?!?

The community I was referring to would not include those in direct or indirect competition with Epifani. I understand that would be a touchy situation especially since there was no direct naming of brands in the bulletin. I was referring to those in the scientific or EE community.
This doesn't mean you wouldn't have the right to comment, just understanding your motive may be questioned if you sell product or design product that competes with Epifani.

I have seen on other HiFi boards, that people who have built a "reference" design class-d, or bought a module were surprised at the bandwidth down to DC. If the pre-amp is also DC coupled there has been reported cases of DC on the output cause by DC getting fed into the amp signal path someplace. (It's only been less than a volt reported, enough to annoy the purists, but nothing to cause harm). Simple fix, is to insert a high-pass (rumble) filter. Nothing too complicated but maybe this gets skipped by some company who just try to swamp one amp for another in their heads?

Pro power amplifiers of any class are going to take of this, so no worries there.

I respect your way of putting all that.

I respect this stance too, but I hate it! The world was built on pointing out the weaknesses of the competition, and quite frankly, I am really bummed that Epifani would choose to make a statement like that with no basis in fact. To me it smacks of scare tactics. I regularly underpower speakers and it never hurts them, even if I push the amp into clipping.

That's the first thing I thought when I read the article. Thinking of all of the Epi cabs I see in the various show your rig threads, I don't remember seeing any Epi amps. I'm sure there are a few, but the number of cabs dwarfs it.

That clearly would be the point of the thinking that it is the result of a specific amp they feel is causing problems. I don't think they sell enough of their heads to have much of a bearing one way or the other. They aren't going to capture the market that is buying $700.00 heads when theirs sell for $1000.00 and $1500.00. I'm guessing the concern is dealing with customers wanting speakers replaced at no charge when they feel it isn't the fault of the speaker. Now are some here implying that Epifani is making up the whole speaker failure issue to try to get people to buy Epifani amps? That doesn't make sense when they have a new amp coming out that will be more price competitive with these new micro heads shortly anyway.

Understood. I was referring more to post #85....not really sure why I quoted yours.

I appreciate "hasbeen" being a poster here. How he handles himself is good advertising for the company. I would love to hear from Epifani on this topic. They made this a public issue by posting it on their site. And again please don't misunderstand me, I love Epifani cabs and would love to check out a UL502. Unfortunately it is just a little beyond what I'm able to justify spending on a head right at the moment. If the Piccolo ever gets out it will be a contender along with the Shuttle 6.0. I may not be able to wait for the Piccolo

Are the speaker drivers getting burned out at low volume? Or are they being blasted at 145 dB with the amp fully maxxed out and fed by active bass preamps that are also maxxed out?

I would be surprised if it is low volume.

If it is high volume, is it really a surprise?
