Epifani web page cabinet compatability warning.

I'll ditto those who were confused about the warning since it was off their site by the time I got into this thread. After pulling it up a 2nd time I figured it probably got taken off, but I still went back a 3rd time to double check. :D

As an owner of a LMII I've always wanted to try their cabs (mostly from KJungs threads) and this debacle won't stop me.
 
What's important to understand is that you can solve the failure of a tweeter due to clipping by increasing the available power, but you then run the risk of damaging the low frequency driver due to excessive power.
One cure is bi-amping (or tri-amping or quad-amping, etc.), which
has long been standard practice for high power PA. Brickwall limiting is another method by which power amp clipping can be eliminated, if so desired.

Exactly Bill, and this is why for (really) high powered pro applications bi-amping and limiting are so important.

Brick wall limiting minimizes mechanical damage but it should also be noted that as the amp is driven harder into limiting, the average power (thermal energy) increases and if there is enough power, the potential exists for trading off mechanical damage for thermal damage. In general thoough, thermal damage is much less common in low frequency drivers than mechanical damage.
 
I'm STILL considering a UL112 despite comments on this thread!

I suspect many people chime in on topics with LIMITED amount of info OR understanding. I don't know much at all, but I, with my limited understanding of the Epifani co., am giving them the benefit of the doubt. I don't think a "bulletin" on a website is really a marketing ploy. did they advertise the info in one of their product descriptions or in a magazine?? IDK. was there a press release?? IDK. :rolleyes:

I like the sound and portability of the UL112 design. THAT IS WHY I'M STILL CONSIDERING THE CAB.

Seriously, if anyone else could do what they do, I'd consider it. For weight vs. tone, I don't know who can beat them. If the Bergie AE410 had weighed 5 or 10 pounds less, I'd be thinking pretty hard about it. (I did anyway)
 
I haven't tried calling them, but I submitted an email question relating to my personal set up and have received 2 email responses addressing the question today. Both basically stated to run with enough headroom to be comfortable and there shouldn't be a concern. They didn't get into more specifics, but they did address my questions adequately, FWIW

Hi Joe,
I think the primary consideration would be to run any rig within the safeoperating parameters of the amp. If it seems like you need to run the gainsor masters past their "comfortable" range you always run the risk of sendingdamaging wave forms into the drivers. So, the real question is how loud doyou need to perform? If you like to play loud and, to accomplish that youneed to run the amps in the "red zone", then it's time to consider getting abigger amp. The best thing to do is to test the Little Mark and F1 and seeif they can meet your volume demands. If you can run them comfortably thenyou should be fine. If you need to really crank either amp then you may runthe risk of frying a driver - and not just our drivers but any driver. I'm just curious - which amp seems to put out more power with the knobs setat equal positions? Hope this helps..

In regards to the WARNING posted on the site, I own a 4ohm UL-410Series 2 cab that I bought from Van Gelder. I use Markbass amps to powerthem. The Little Mark II 500 watts @ 4ohms and the F1 also 500 watts @4ohms. The F1 is a Class D power supply. I do not have any issues with thesewith your cab. Actually, it sounds fantastic. However, I am concerned if these amps are the ones you may have seen causing issues with the drivers in your cabs. Thanks in advance for your advice on this.

The responses from Epifani seem very reasonable. Initially I was thinking either (a) there is an electronics problem and people are making innocent mistakes resulting in blown speakers, or (b) no real problem except that people are cranking their amps to 11, and no wonder the speaker blows.

Seems like (b) is where the failures are coming from. But maybe they don't admit it in order to get free warranty repair. Just speculation on my part.

So, next question, a real question: aside from hearing the speaker cone hit the front grill, how do you know when you are in "the red zone" and in danger of blowing cone? Certainly it is going to be loud, but how loud? Does anyone ever park an SPL Meter in front to measure dB's? Can one measure watts output from the amp?
