Double Bass Ergo Megathread part I

I have an Ernie Ball Volume foot pedal. Backing off a little from 100% makes a hugh difference. The rig for this is a Mesa Walkabout and a Whappo Jr. If I plug right into the amp, I get too much "scritch". Plug in to the foot pedal, and run it all the way up, again too much scritch. The pedal is a little clunky, but kind of handy too because there are no knobs on the Ergo.
I had an Acoustic Image New Yorker for a while. Didn't need the foot pedal. No scritch at all. I should try to get that amp back.
I have an "fdeck" HPF-Pre on order. Im very interested to hear what that does.

I have to admit, I've been neglecting it for the last several months in favor of the fretless J-bass. But I have an fdeck hpf-pre on the way, and that might get me fired up to play this thing more.
Maybe I should put on some new strings. Do I use 3/4 or 4/4 length? Suggestions? I love the TI-Flats on the J-bass.

Can I join too? I've had my ergo6 for about a year and it kicks ass. I'm looking for strings though .Does Thomastik Spirocore make all 6 and who sells them ?

ok....i gotta get rid of these stock strings and i heard Thomastik spirocore weichs are good, but who sells sets of 6 from B to C? I play pizz, latin jazz.......any ideas or other strings to try?

You get the B and C separate, but I think they are orchestra. I use Sprios, but the low B is still the Heliocore Jesse put on. Normally the C and B are good quality strings, heliocore or corelli, so maybe start with a normal 4 string set of weichs and see how that goes.

It is pretty out there for most taste but I do think it demonstrates the dynamic and flexibility of the instrument.
I have it going through my Crate power block head since I have European tour coming and that is what I am bringing.

I've been playing around with my bass to get the best sound and I've found that if I put a little extra pressure on the bridge I get a much fuller sound.
To add the pressure, I tied a fat shoe lace around the bass just below the bridge. It's not that tight at all, adds 1 or 2lbs of pressure.
I thought my bass sounded great out of the box but when I added the shoelace, it sounds just incredible. Far superior to amping my chinese plywood bass.
I assume that it's because the bass is new and the foam will eventually compress?
Anyone else experience similiar things when their bass was new? did it wear in?

I really like my Fender Frontman 25B as a low-volume amp for both my upright and electric basses. Nice punch, tight sound, good tone. It gets buried underneath a drummer, but it's fine for acoustic music like you said you're playing. (I've done lots of old-time/Irish/fiddle band gigs with this amp.)Well after many, many years away from the bass I am finally coming back to it. For the most part I play Irish traditional and Old Time music with a little Blue Grass tossed in here and there.
So with that in mind when I decided I wanted to play Bass again I wanted a sound closer to a UB rather then a BG. After a week of reading info here on Talkbass and looking at the different EUB offerings I contacted Jesse and found that he had a 4 string Ergo that had not been spoken for......well it's spoken for now(OK so what did I get myself into?
)
Now I need some direction for a practice amp (direction...hmmm make that). I am trying to keep the cost down and am looking for something for both practice and playing with a few friends in an acoustic setting (so it does not have to shake the walls down
)
I have looked at a few offerings from Peavey and I have read with interest about the Ashdown Five Fifteen if that helps to show in what direction I want to go. I am trying not to end up with an amp that is ment for a BG and does not sound good at all for a EUB, but I want to try and cut cost if at all possible (one of the reasons I went with the Ergo to begin with....that and the wonderful stuff I read in this thread).
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated in this matter
Thanks to Bassbob, Butchonbass and Showdown for sharing their mods.........here's mine....just found a piece of aluminum corner trim left over from my kitchen reno, cut, drilled and presto! Had to add a couple nuts to the E and a separate anchor for the B....but the Spirocores now go on properly with no gluing or soldering.....hooray! Sounds great too now that I've removed the factory strings.
