Euphonic Audio iAmp Classic 1200 watt

Has anyone compared the sound of the iAmp Classic with the iAmp800 yet? The iAmp Pro did not have the "girth" of the iAmp800 (although you could EQ it to sound VERY close) and I'm wondering if this model does better in that department.

Yes, I have done just this, but I have also recently been told that EA made a few tweaks to the iAMP Classic to make it even more similar in the "girth" and "heft" to the 800. They are sending me an updated unit, and therefore, I will wait to report on this until after I've been able to compare the new iAMP Classic to my old iAMP 800.

I have and the The Classic sounded exactly like the Pro to me, so I returned it. Not the iAmp 800 heft that was advertised. From what I understand the updated version still leans much more towards sounding like a Pro than a 800.

I was able to spend a few minutes last night playing through the updated iAMP Classic and comparing it to the prior version, and it is immediately apparrent that the update has definitely added some more "girth/heft," while maintaining the overall clarity/tone. I did not get to try it against the iAMP 800 yet, but I most definitely think that the new version of the iAMP Classic will be a closer comparison.

Thanks! I purchased another iAmp 800 after I sent the Classic back just to see and the difference is quite apparent without having them side by side. Revisiting the 800 did however remind me of how the 800 may have too much girth/heft, so maybe the Classic update put it in a better spot. Guess I'll give it another go.

Can someone describe the difference between the 800 and the classic in more technical terms? Is this a frequency response thing, or is it something to do with compression/limiting/power management? I use an iAmp 500, and I like that it's frequency response seems to be completely flat by default. That great EQ section makes it really easy to dial in the tone I want, and, although I'm not much for effects, it handles pedals really well.

IME/IMHO, all of the iAMPs do a pretty good job of delivering balance, fairly neutral, clear-but-full tone. The differences I hear tend to be in the power/speed/feel of the delivery, which is a hard thing to put in words (the proverbial dancing about architecture...).

Do you know if EA has installed the ICEpower 1200AS1 amp module in the Classic? By its specs (1200 watts, no 2-ohm rating) it looks as though they had replaced the ICEpower 1000ASP they used in the Pro with the 1200AS1.

By ICEpower's specs, the 1200AS1 only puts out 25 more watts than the 1000ASP into 4 ohms with 1% THD+N, so, spec-wise, they are nearly identical. Of course, the 1200AS1 could SOUND very different from the 1000ASP.

I have not confirmed which module, but I believe it is the newest 1,200w module from ICEpower.

Hey, Tom, Low Class, any more thoughts on the heft/feel of the new iAmp Classic, either in general or vs. the old 800?

Edit: To be clear, I have not played an iAmp 800 -- the only EA amp I've played is @Mike Arnopol's hot-rodded Doubler (in which he installed an ICE 250ASX2 -- similar, I believe, to what's used now in the Doubler II). I liked Mike's Doubler -- seemed pretty neutral without sounding sterile, and was pretty lively and well-behaved at the same time -- though it didn't hit like my favorite, class AB lead sleds or have the same level of detail. Aside from being able to go louder, I guess I'd be curious as to how the Classic compares to the Doubler (or Doubler II), both in feel and with regard to voicing (particularly in the deep lows and how extended vs. "pocketed" they are -- sometimes a difficult balance to achieve.)
