I'm thinking I'll try these next. If I get my heart broken by some yet to be seen durabiliy issue, so be it. Pirastro is good about standing behing their products.

The kind folks at Pirastro Gmbh. They must have given out so many free sets this spring that they didn't have enough to give to their suppliers...

OK, for those of you who think this might be useful (and I'm not sure I think it is): I put two tunes hot off the griddle on my Myspace page, so the first two on there (the xtet tunes) are the Evah Pirazzis. There are bass solos at the end of the tracks for a closer listen. The other two tunes are Dominants, recorded in the same studio. It will be hard to discern a huge difference between the strings, but I will say that the amount of sound put out by the bass with Pirazzis was greater than with Dominants, and so the sound on the Pirazzi tracks is more of a "room" sound than a "close" sound (and when the levels are all adjusted in the control room, the result becomes just a tone/response difference rather than a level difference).

Oh....that's not what I'm looking for in a string. I need something that will be so lovely that it distracts people from my playing.

Actually, listening now and jokes aside. Both you and the strings sound great.

The Dominants definitely sound a little crisper, more spirocorish. Also a good sound.

And after having listened to all 4 tracks, props on your music and your playing. Very nice all around. I have to say that I prefer the sound of the Evah P's.

Thanks for the compliments, you guys. I bought a bass last year that changed the way I played, and although I never would have thought that strings could have the same effect I think they can. I started playing with guts in January and I feel like it expanded my consciousness, and the Pirazzis have kind of done the same thing. I never was able to get exactly the sound I wanted from Spirocores (although I do think Dominants are great strings), but I've had kind of an "a-ha!" moment with these Pirazzis. So even though I subscribe to the idea we've been talking about in Reuben Radding's recent thread of just getting a usable set-up and working with it, I also think it's pretty cool to find the usable set-up that's just right...

Beautiful, imaginitve playing Jeremy! An early teacher once said to me, "Your instrument will lend it's sound to you." This seems not so stunning a statement taken out of context, I regret. But it underlines the meaning of your Ahah moment. You've clearly figured out how to employ your sound.

Sorry to get back on topic, but let me get this straight.... I can't pay a retailer to fill my order for a string that's been advertised for several months, but if I ask the manufacturer, they'll send them to me free? I took some marketing classes back in the day, but I must have missed that chapter. :confused:

I'm sure that Europeans feel this way about American products.

I sent a fishing email to Pirastro (didn't ask them outright) and they send me an information .pdf and suggested that I join their newsletter, but didn't offer me free strings.

I emailed both Quinn and Lemur today and asked if they were available. Chris from Quinn replied that he's placed orders with his Pirsatro distributer(s), but doesn't have them yet. Lemur has individual strings on their site, but not the set. I asked them if they were in stock and what the per set price was and haven't received a reply yet.

Got some alcohol out and gave my Jazzers a good cleaning.

The response from Lemur just came in that they are out of A strings and don't know when they'll have complete sets for shipping. Watch the website.

I'm officially not thinking about this any more. I've got other things to focus on for a while. I swear....

Well, the OLIVs are supple and have a good feel and the EPs don't actually exist. They're a myth like the unicorn or yeti.


O.K., here's a partially better answer. I played each of these strings at fairly different times, with months of seperation, so take it for what it's worth. They all share a certain suppleness, bounciness that I really enjoy about them, which is one of the main reasons for watching this thread. I would guess that the EP is between the OLIV and Obligato in gauge. The EP reminded me more of the OLIV than the Obligato, but I really think that if I had had them on one after the other, the EP G would have paled to the OLIV. I don't think it will have the presence, but it's a good proximity to it. Better than anything else I've played.

I think that the OLIV is fairly unlike other plain gut strings that I've played in sound and feel.

The Obligato left me with an impression of being thinner with much less presence than either of the other two.

Tension, is a scientific measure that I can't really comment on, but Pirastro might if you emailed them. I can only give you my impressions of feel.

...but I'm not actually thinking about strings anymore so I don't even know why you're talking to me right now.
