Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

The weichs aren't tight on my bass at all. Under my right hand they seem like they give a bit more than mittels did although they have a nice resistance if that makes any sense.
I did a trio gig tonight and was thinking that my bass could take a bit more tension. They are now 19 months old so maybe they become more or less compliant but I dunno.
Never trying the regulars I am curious to learn more about the differences.

So, just to 100 percent clarify Drurb,
(I read about 60 pages of the megathread about a month or so ago)

1. The Weichs play easier than the regulars.

2. You stopped playing them because they were Too stiff.

How did you feel about the stiffness of the regulars?

How would you compare the stiffness to a set of say, Helicore Pizz? Is there a comparison?

I can't afford to buy both sets, as i had said above im a big guy, and i dont have problem generating power with my pizz. I did see on ebay you can get a extended E in weichs, but i still am concerned about bowing them as it is a major part of my playing.

So also to anyone out there who has done a direct comparison lately, what do you think? I only have experience with helicores. If you can relate how the feel different then Heli's, let us know?

interesting. one of the sets of regulars that i played was so easy and soft to play that i thought that it just couldnt be the bass making that much of a difference. i played 2 sets of regulars, both were easier than my weichs, but one set of regulars was just so easy. they were like butter. it was a really nice bass though. my weichs feel kind of stiff on my bass, but the tone is nice. as we have all read here before, there are many factors that go into the percieved "feel" of a string. my bass is a large 7/8th with a 42 inch string length and a fairly tall bridge and a massive tailpiece. the bass where the regs felt easy had a 41 inch (or slightly shorter) length and probably slightly less projection on the neck angle resulting in a shorter bridge and perhaps less downward pressure on the top. i guess all of these factors interact to make the "voodoo".

so just to recap, generally speaking, the consesus is that on the same bass, weichs are easier to play and feel less stiff than the regs?

Well, then it seems that you experienced a large interaction across the different basses. I've had both Evah regulars and Evah weichs on my bass. The latter were substantially easier to play. The regulars felt like playing on bridge cables. Eventually, the stiffness of the weichs got to me and I'm back to Spiros.

Yes to both 1 and 2. I'll reiterate my history briefly for you. Many here have read this a few times. Anyway, I went from a set of Doms to the Evah regulars. HUGE, HUGE, powerful sound on my bass, which tends to sound powerful with just about anything on it but it was unbelievable! As others had experienced, playing on them caused the first joint of my right index finger to ache. That faded after a couple of weeks. Still, I found the regulars a bit much. What I gained in power, I gave up in articulation. Given my string heights at the time (about 10 mm at the E, about 7.5 mm at the G), they were a bear.

I switched to the Evah weichs. As others have also noted, the EP weichs are really more typical of a "mittel" or "regular" string, while the EP regulars are more like a stark. The naming is quite misleading. I found the weichs to be easier to play, still producing gut-punching power and low-end (a bit less than the regulars). One characteristic, also noted by many others here, is that they (like the regulars) have a certain front-end stiffness right at the attack of a pizz. note. It seems to be part and parcel of their punchy sound. That stiffness actually seems to increase as they age. Others have found that as well. All was well, until... at the end of a gig, I ripped open the sagittal band holding the tendon on my right middle finger.

When I was allowed to return to playing after surgery, I put on a set of Spiro mitts and dialed down the string height. They were a breeze to play compared to the weichs. Later, I raised the string height back up to about 9+ mm at the E, ~7 mm at the G. After a time, I put the EP weichs back on. I immediately noticed that the intoxicating thundering fundamentals were back. An open E would go down through the floor, up into my body, and loosen fillings in my teeth. :) I also noticed immediately that the front-end stiffness put far, far more strain on my hand than did the Spiro mitts.

The experiment lasted a day or two. The Spiro mitts went back on. Basically, I traded the dark, powerful EP sound for the "whine" and growl and classic sound of Spiros and the safety of my hand. Perhaps I could handle the EP weichs with lower string heights. I really have no desire to find out because, frankly, I'm really happy with that classic Spiro sound. It's hard to beat!

Finally, if ever YMMV holds, it's here. Some players find the EP weichs easier to play than the Spiros. On my bass, to my hands, it's WAY in the opposite direction. I don't have an explanation for the disparity-- it just is. Despite all the agreement about the characteristics of EPs and Spiros, you just never know until they're on your bass.

I really don't have any specific experience with the Helicore pizz. to make the comparison. Hope this all helps.

...so just to recap, generally speaking, the consesus is that on the same bass, weichs are easier to play and feel less stiff than the regs?

Indeed. I'm not aware that anyone here has found the difference to be in the opposite direction when both were tried on the same bass. It also makes sense. :)

For over two years I mixed and matched Spiro mittels, Evah regulars and Olive G & D on my Juzek, in about every combination (except that the Olive G was almost always on - it's a beaut!).

I found the EP regulars to be a very good match to the Spiro mittels in size and tension, with the EPs being a little softer and more flexible. The Olive G is quite heavy, but softer still. The best overall combination was Oliv G, EP D & A and Spiro E (for the growl).

I changed to Spiro weichs a while back for a recording session, and now I'm getting itchy fingers for new strings again. The Oliv is back on (Yay!), and I'm experimenting with Ds - always the most problematic string on this bass. I don't want to go as heavy as mittels again (I've got soft using the spiro weichs), so I expect I'll try EP weichs , maybe a weich D & A with the spiro weich E.

The full set of EP regulars is now residing on my spare bass - and they sound great! They are pretty old now, but don't seem to have become stiffer with age.

Ya know, if i had the money for the different sets of strings and had a few helpers to change them fast, I'd totally go into the studio and do a string shootout in front of our Microtech/Gefell's, the Earthworks Z-1's and 30's, the Lawson L47 and the U87.

Man that would be a long all day thing, but it sure would be fun! :)

Yes, but also unfortunately not completely accurate either. The bass/string combination doesn't always just "snap" together. Sometimes the combinations need some time to settle in. Things that sound or feel one way at first can settle into something else later.

Evah Pirazzi are definitely in that category. They sound and feel very different after settling in than they do right out of the package.

I certainly notice that more with plastic core and gut core strings than steel core. Gut particularly can sound and feel very solid in a month where right out of the box it's not so great.

Evahs have been on for a couple months, gigging in various situations.

Plus side: Big warm sound, no whiny thin treble, not too hard don the hands

Minus side: a little dull sounding for solos in the mid register

My bass (shen 7/8 willow fltbck) has always been very even toned and consistent across all it range--no"dead spots." But with the Evah's I've started to notice that the bass resonates differently in some ranges than others. Interesting.

I still like them, they're good strings. They have a little less "character" than either the spiro weichs or the velvet blues that were on there before

I've had this bass for 5-6 years. The Evahs are good, I like them, as everybody says they're a lot of fun for walking. Soloing I'm not as happy, the notes are a little bland sounding. I'm sticking with the Evahs for a while though--I like the sound in the band a lot

I was just wondering how long Evah Pirazzi's last? I have a set of EP weichs that are a little over a year old. They are starting to get a little thuddy. I have a dark sounding bass to begin with, so I am considering going back to spirocore weichs. A tough call, since I have really enjoyed the EPs.

Thanks,

Hans

I got the regulars used from a guy here on TB. he said they were over a year old. I myself have been using them for over a year now, or maybe just about a year mainly for orchestra, and I practice a lot, and they are still going strong. I wanna see how long I can keep these in and see if I break some sort of record! ;)
