If you find you don't like the G enough, grab one of the Oliv G's on the Classifieds. There are a few going for pretty cheap.
Bob: The absolute best G string (after the wonderful Oliv) I have ever used (and I have tried lots!), is the Flexocor Deluxe G. Solid fundamental. Not high tension. The sound matches well with other steel strings and synthetic cores.
I love everything about the EP Weich set but the E. And I always ended up replacing it with a Spiro mittel E. However, I recently replaced the Spiro with an EP Regular E and soundwise that works fine.
The best part of it (other the set just sounds more consistent) is that I have a much better E string to bow on. Having one string that doesn't bow as well as the others was always a drag for me.

Daveming: I have only tried the D and G EP Weich. But that was before the Flexocor DeLuxe. I think the De Luxe would work well with it. It works well with Zyex Mediums and Spiro Weichs/Mittel. I play pizz only on a ply Eberle.
I'd say if you like EP Weichs you would be happy with the all the Flexocor DeLuxe set. They are a little dark (not as dark as pizz Bel Cantos) but are solid and have a little more life to them than EP Weichs.
Thanks, martinc. Another bass player told me about the Flexocor Deluxe set recently as well. The EP Weich works great for my bass except for the E, which bows well, but which I found to be a bit weak/light (esp. pizz). I think the Flexocor D's will be the next in line on the string quest. My bass is more on the bright side than dark, so they might fit the bill.
Thinking of getting Evah Pirazzis for my bass next. How long do they last compared with Spirocores?
Daveming: The Flexocore D is the same tension as the G (approx 63 lbs according to a query I sent to Pirastro). It still has a solid sound. The two feel slightly stiffer than the Spirocore Weich light gauge D and G string but the sound a little more solid. They are a bit darker than Spiro Weichs that have lost their zing. The A and E Flexocore DeLuxe have the same tension (approx 73 lbs) but they feel more like Spiro Mittels. They have a very solid sound and are on the dark side but not as dark in my experience as the EP Weichs.
I recently replaced my G and D Zyex mediums with the Flexocore Deluxe G with a worn-in Spiro Weich D. Now, with the Spiro Mittel E... Spiro Weich A and D..... and Flexocore DeLuxe G, I have the overall sound and feel I want. Next to the Olive G (which overpowers any D next to it), the Flexocore G is the best sounding G I have ever used.It is full, easy on the hands and does not have excess sustain. I could easily live with the G and D Zyex mediums but the present all-steel mix gives me a quicker response and a little less sustain.
Hard to say how they would sound on another bass though.

I had Evah weichs on my bass for 18 months but really should have changed them after about a year. When I played spiros, they lasted for several years. And even then, I usually only changed them to try something different.
I can't compare them to Spiros, but i used Evah Weichs for several years and i found that for the first 3 or 4 months they felt really great, then after that they lost something. They were still very good, but not quite the same. I generally got about a year out of them, after that they went downhill fairly quickly
Oh no guys. Has anyone heard about the new Evah Slap Set? These look interesting. I can't find any information other than what pirastro posts.
They were developed with ace slap/gypsy bassist Nicolas Dubouchet (google him for some amazing videos). Stabilised gut D and G and EP-like E/A (though Pirastro say its a new core material so they aren't just EPs). Initially listed at Euro 340-ish at Bassico in Germany, they are now showing them at a more reasonable Euro 290 Invalid Link Removed
Wonder when they'll be available in the regular US shops. Curious how they sound for jazz playing

Ah, yes, Pirastro... Brand new set with completely different construction, same old name. What's wrong with those people?
They probably thought "hmmm there are already 3 meatheads for the Evahs, maybe if we give them something new to post about we can make it to 4!"
