Perhaps it was because you had not played the instrument for a while. After a big repair recently, I still feel my instrument opens up a bit in periods where I play it more, and vice versa

Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part III

This could be true and this is what I am trying to figure out. Also maybe my perceptions have changed since i played for year on four gut strings. But one thing I remember about the other bass is that it was always very easy to play. That's why I bought it actually. It has two upper gut strings and the Eva's on the lower strings. I've always thought that they were a good match but I don't think that anymore.. I got me to thinking that I know I have read somewhere around here that the Eva's get stiff as they get old. And these are very old. Maybe 7 years or so. Also I could probably use the sound post adjustment as the weather has recently changed here . I wonder if something like that would create this perception for me as well
Depending on the gut strings you probably notice a difference in tension because you're used to a full set of even, low tension strings.
it is entirely possible that my perceptions have changed. but i played that other bass for over 7 years, a lot! i cant believe that my memory of it is so off. im thinking maybe soundpost. i remember my Gf asking me to turn it down, when it wasnt even plugged in. it doesnt seem to have that kind of volume right now.
Maybe the fine fibers of the synthetic core stick to it's neighbors, maybe due to sweat or wet dirt going into the core. When that dries it can glue the fibers together making them stiff.
Just a hypothesis, but that's how I can explain that it happens.
Bowing the strings hard and loud on different pitches might break the "glue" at least a bit.
But then that should happen with Obligato and Zyex too, because they use the same kind of core (PEEK). But I cannot remember that I read anything like that happening with Obligato or Zyex here. (Which might tell more about my brain than about the content of TalkBass).
So my hypothesis might be wrong.
The core of Innovation strings is sealed, so that shouldn't happen with these strings (and I never read that it happened with them).

Very interesting. I know that something that I don't play a bass for a couple of days I perceive a difference in sound and fell. Who knows.
Which reminds me of when some 15 years ago Eddie Gomez played a solo concert here in Copenhagen, on a borrowed bass. It was amazing. And he commented on that people were surprised and impressed that he was able to do so, on a bass he only encountered that same day, by saying: Every day my own bass is new to me.
can anyone comment on the perceived tension of corelli 370 F vs the evah weich? i have 2 unused strings here but i dont want to put them on unless there's a shot they will feel softer. im wondering if the lack of mids on the old evahs make me feel like they're tight and not projecting as well...right now they're dull and thumpy, the gut g string has more life to it
I've Read and had first hand experience that even the heaviest Corelli strings are lighter than your standard weich string (Evah, spirocore etc). Their heaviest set is played by a bassist here in Nola and when I played it they are what I imagine solo strings tuned down fell like.
My suggestion would be to get a new pair of eva weich E and A. Them being dead may be making you over play them and thus think they are stiff

I have been looking at some used evahs again but I always remember the issue with them is that the mediums are way too heavy and the weich are too light for my bass. Shame.
Honestly that too. Here in town everyone's playing on evahs or gut. One person played zyex before going back to evahs recently and I know a gut player trying Velvets. I can only think of 5 people (other than some students starting out in the university) who have a full set of spiros and one of them is me.
I have a Evah w E on my bass now, had the A too, but I can`t stand the A string having ( especially next to plain guts, set reasonably higher vs full set of E.P w`s ) more tension than E. Garbo A went back on yesterday. Does anybody know what`s the reason for " balancing " them like that?
