Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part III

Just stopping by to bump this Evah thread as I see all the activity in that other thread :laugh: and say I’ve been happy using this old set of E. Weichs. They feel and sound so good! I just got a slightly used set to put on after this Grand Canyon trip, looking forward to the new (To me) ones!
I recently discovered this “Live at Massey Hall” album w/ Herbie, Brecker, Hardgrove, Blade with Patittucci on bass. I’d like to think he’s playing the Evahs here :)

Can’t believe it myself but it’s been almost 20 years since that Herbie/Brecker/Hargrove project first came out! :roflmao:

I remember seeing that band when they came to NJ and I think that was still before Evah’s. Regardless, Pattitucci sounds amazing as always.

The show I saw was next level... one of the most immersive concerts I have experienced. They played continuously, connecting each tune with (what I assume) was improvised interludes. Really cool.

I had a Spiro mittel E under Evah w ADG shortly because I thought that the reqular Evah E was a little hard to start arco and sounding very muddy around A flat. So yesterday I switched back to the Evah E and it`s all good. Go figure, might be the weather though as the temperatures are wandering between frozen and plus around this time of the year.

So I bought my fist set of Evah Pirazzi Weichs and I also purchased an Oliv G and D. Would you all recommend trying the full set of EP’s first and see how I like the D and G since I’ve never tried them before.

I bought the Oliv D and G because that is what my teacher uses and I love the sound.

Yes. If the EPs are great, why go to the trouble of filing and lubing bridge and nut slots? When you're ready to try the Olivs, try the G first. Your bass will tell you what to do.

Well after catching COVID right after my last post I finally got around to putting the EP’s on today. They are still stretching and I hope to get more playing time in tomorrow. But I like the tone and the thump. They are my first non down tuned solo set in a while and I like the added volume.

Decided to order another Evah Pirazzi gold/slap G string last night. Looking at my order history with Gollihur Music, I realized that I have had the full synthetic set on both my ‘53 Kay C-1 and my KDB Roadking since August of 2017.

I’m going to order a spare set Friday when I get paid, but I thought that was a fair testament to the longevity of these strings. Maybe not Spirocore life, but only time will tell. All I know is that I’ve slapped the heck out of them for a long time and haven’t thought about trying any other strings in that period.

I just lowered my action on my Upton that has a set of EP Slap synthetics on it since late March. It got louder. I sacrificed "slap", but gained "pizz". I'm beginning to really enjoy these strings for pizz & arco. Fantastic response with a bow or at least are very forgiving to an arco-hack like me!

Hope that you're well and in good health! Handle the EP G and D with similar care as you would with Olivs, they aren' t most durable string IME.

I'm loving the EP slaps on my ply.

I raised the action on my EP weichs on my hybrid, to allow me to really get under them to grab them. Not thrilled with slapping them - hard to do w/ much subtlety (complimenting myself to believe I am CAPABLE of subtlety in any aspect of my playing! ;)) And the higher action made the left hand and non-slap playing more challenging.

So I dropped the action, and love that bass for everything other than slap - which is a fraction of my playing. When I wanna slap, my ply fills that need fantastically.

A luxury of having 2 basses, that I don't have to fall down the rabbithole trying to get 1 bass perfect for ALL uses.

(BTW - our casual little string trio just added a VIOLA! So THAT'S what was supposed to be going on during those rests! :D What fun - tho I suck at it.)

I really wanted to like my EP light set but they felt like they had a sort of limited dynamic range. I have had that experience a lot w synthetic strings where there is like a small sweet spot between overplaying and underplaying w the right hand. But this was a couple of years ago and I will probably try them again since the string thing goes in circles.

my 2 cents:

They will crap out with hard hitting right hand and at least I need enough string height to compensate that ( G@ 7 mm's ). On the other hand I think there's similar thing going on as with guts and acoustic playing, one needs to trust the sound coming out, it will carry in the room really well as it functions in a register that nothing else fullfills, except maybe bass drum if there' s one in the ensemble. I have a problem with bright steel strings as they partly fill the same frequency spectrum as many other instruments I play with do.

Also, I think it's also stylistical thing with EP's darker and mellower nature. Since covid I' ve been mostly playing roots and folk stuff and they compliment reso guitars, banjos and harps really well. Red Spiros are too much for me in that setting for reasons above, even when I really dig their aggresive nature nowadays. Go figure, if I was only bowing I would switch to Spiro mittels permanently right away. EP w bow well, but it' s their pizz tone I absolutely love. Lot of that gut vibe in there, and just about right amount of note decay.

All that said, I switched back to Spiro mittel E and a tad flatter curvature of the bridge tonight. Gotta have the G high enough for pizz, but also great bowing ergonomics without weak E string syndrome. Clarity and power is very welcome down there.

I put a set of EP Weichs on my bass the other day, and really like them except for one thing: I’ve never experienced it before so I can’t say for sure, but the A string sort of turns all the way around when plucked, sort of like the rubber strings on a U-bass. I assume that’s what people are referring to by “rolling?”

It’s kind of offputting! Is this normal? Or is this something where I should see about getting a replacement string?

Yes, that's rolling. Early versions of Obligatos sometimes did this on the lower strings, and one of the big improvements of the Evahs was to eliminate that. I bet you've got a defective string and Pirastro will straighten you out.
