Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part III

I have EPs on two bass & EPWeichs on an old American Standard (Pirastro sent me the EPWeichs- put them on the AS because if the thinner top)- Bowing & Pizz great.
Love / prefer the feel of the thicker stringsMed. EPs & really love the sound.
Had Spiros, More Pirastros, D'Addario Heliocre Orch & Hybrids- wanted Gut...apprehensive because of the $ if they wouldn't last. ( even had a D'Addario string endorsement)
Tried many brands on friends basses & at a bass shop.
Depends on the bass.
Love EPs!

I recently put a set of Evah weich on my bass, an Eastman 305 and I just can't get into their sound. Totally a love hate relationship right now. I did a few sound post adjustments and it helped. The sound post was so flipping tight so I took it out, trimmed it and reset it. Now it is snug like it should be. For this bass, I think they are a miss.

Very true. I had been using EP weichs with Oliv G and loved that set up on my old bass. On the new bass just to dark so went with perms instead.

Interesting. I just restrung the bass with a few spiro mittles that were a year old but played the heck out of. They are fairly dead as far as the spiro "zing" but now there is some actual tone coming out of the bass which the EP had almost none.

If do it early enough you might want to rescue an unraveling string in the peg box with shrinking tube (from the electronics store). Probably too late now if the unravelling reached the nut or the part on the other side of the nut.
Just an idea for next time.

But don't do that with a synthetics core string, the heating will melt the core. (But rubber tube might work in this case.)

I knew I'd eventually wind up posting on this thread ;)

For years I was an Obligato fan, but on the bass I bought last year (50+ year old carved German) they were just too "mushy", especially the E and A. I'm not a fan of mixing strings, so I went with a set Thomastik Superflexibles which were good hybrid strings, but I wasn't entirely satisfied with them.

I just installed a set of Evah Pirazzi weichs and I'm very pleased so far. They are similar to the Obligatos, but with just enough additional tension to suit this bass. They're not as bright as the Superflexibles, but are much warmer with a loud and focused arco tone. I'm glad that I chose the wiech set and the tension seems just right.

I've had the Evah's on since august this time arround and you know what? The longer i play them, the Easier they get! I played on a few other sets of strings in the last few weeks and i love the Evah Weichs. They just bounce so well. Mebby im wearing them out or after a long time they finally break in or their will just gives to my hands. They play and sound like a dream.

At this point i don't even want to try a new set!

Hey guys. Wondering if anyone can help me. Right now I'm playing Spriocores (I'm a jazz player). My question is about the Evah Pirazzis strings. I am interested in them and was wondering:

1. how long do they last? could I get a year or 2 out of a set
2. Would it make since to mix the Spiro E & A with a Pirazzis D & G string
3. What are the pros and cons of these strings?

Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

As i recieved my set used and third hand, i assume my set is 5 years old and sounds great. I have no idea what a new set would sound like. I have used my set for about a year for arco and pizz. As i said in the post above, they seemed to "give" after about 6 months of play and the stiffness associated with them disappeared completely. Perhaps they have a very very long break in period. I know the previous owners played the crap out of these strings.

2. I have no idea

3. I am told they will bow much better than the spiros, but i have no first hand experience. I can tell you they play well enough to play dragonetti and bach. They handle harmonics well under the bow.

That's what I think of any string:
For someone a string is dead after some time because it sounds different than before and for other they have broken-in after this time.
Of course the life for any string is over when it gets out of tune due to unequal changes in the material structure that become audible.

The regular EPs have a similar tension than the Spiro Mittel, but are completely different in sound. FOr jazz EP Weich are better, since they are not as damped as the regular EP. But even them will get rather dark over time. Some have problems to hear intonation amplified. I prefer Innovation 140B, a bit less tension and a bit brighter than EP Weich. Probably also a bit cheaper and very nice to bow also. Pizz is a bit soft, not for aggressive playing but this is true for almost any braided synthetic core string.

For at least 90% pizz the Compas 180 is a nice string and powerful. Brightest braided synthetic core string I know. Dominants (a solid core synthetic string set) might have a bit more power but might also feel a bit stiff.

I don't have the EP Weich data, but the regular EP:

G D A E
28.4 29.6 32.3 31.1 (kg with 105cm scale, I think)

The EP Weich G fits rather well with Spiro Mittel 4/4 (S42) tensionwise (similar to Spiro Weich 3/4), a little bit less tension perhaps. But amplified too dark, specially with the Spiros.

I have understood the EP Weich tension is about 10% less than the regulars. Is that really the case?

This would imply a very low tension (eg.: G 25.5 kg, 26.6 kg and so on ...).

I cannot imagine that EP Weich have such a low tension. Does anyone know the tension of EP Weich?

Hey guys. I've got 2 quick questions:

1. How do the regular set compare in tension to Spirocores
2. If I were to put regular EP's on my bass would i have to get the nut adjusted (because the D and G string are slightly thicker).

Thanks for the help. Thinking of switching the spiro D and G with EP D and G

Evah Pirazzi mediums have more tension than Spirocore Mediums.
You will not need to have the nut adjusted as the differences are pretty minimal.

bskts: Try the Zyex G and D with the Spiro Mediums. Or the Dominant Orchs. I have mixed both of these and find they work quite well together.
EP's don't work with pickups as well as Spiro's or Dominants in my experience. I have used a K &K BassMax, Rev Solo and Schatten RB1 and none of them picked up the EP Reg D and G very well. No problems though with the Dominants or Zyex.

Interesting. In my experience(on my bass) the EP Regulars sounded great with the pickup. More natural and organic sounding than the Zyex(although I like these as well). I think its likely a lot more bass related how the strings respond when amplified. EP's are great strings though. A bit expensive now, but they do last quite a while.

On the Tension question, how do the Evah Pirazzi strings compare to the Obligatos? I enjoy the tension of the Obligatos but dont like that they only last about a year

Right now I have Obligatos on one of my basses and Evah Pirazzi Weich on the other. The Obligatos are lower tension and have more of a tendency to roll. Even in the Weich gauge the Evah Pirazzi strings are more taut than the Obligatos.
