Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part III

Try the Innovation Braided Solo string tuned town or maybe Evah Solos tuned down.
If there are Zyex in Solo tuning, you might consider them too.
If you don't care about the rolling, you might want to try Obligato Solo tuned down.
They are all much better with bowing than any Velvet string I have used.

But all these are flat-wound. Only some wound gut strings are roundwound (and most strings for EBG...).

The Silver Slaps can be bowed if you put some rosin in the bowed area of the strings. But they are not the best for orchestra. THe Sustain fits well to the gut sustain, a bit longer than the gut. Don't compare the wound synthetic string to the monofiber ones like whackers, the wound synthetics have a much longer sustain. You might want to get a set used to try them out.

Some people like Spiro Solos tuned down with gut. Maybe the 4/4 Solos to get a better tension match to the gut.

Also try the Obligato tuned a whole tone lower (probably best before you tune up to the regular orchestral tuning). If this is better, you can get the Solos and tune them down.

I did and they're horrible. Obligatos suck. They roll around under my fingers and feel worse than wrapped guts with the winding come loose! Never again.
I'm actually considering the Evah lights and if I don't like the E&A matched with guts then I'll get the rest of the set to put on my other bass.

I think that Evah Weich have still too much tension for most naked gut strings. Downtuned Evah Solos will fit better unless you have higher tension gut strings.

And there are still the Innovation Braided and the D'Addario Zyex you can try.
I did warn you about the rolling of the lower Obligato strings. The Braided don't have the rolling, have not tried the Zyex, but I haven't read of a similar problem like with the Obligato.

Zyex dont roll. I have a friend who had had them on for over a year and they are fine. Ive only ever tried my spiros and D'adarrios so i dont know. I may try Evahs next

Im using the Evah Weich's for Jazz and for Classical. Stuff like Bach. They work fine. I got my set already shot so i don't know how well the harmonics ring on a new set but i dig what i have. I will try something else when i get the money. Something very Expensive.

sam: I'd suggest the mediums. The lights may be too light for you if you are considering EP Weichs in the mix.
The mediums work well with Spiro Weichs even though they have a bit less sustain.
It would be worth buying a G or D to try. They are very reasonably priced. They sound good and are well made....the best D'Addario double bass string I have ever used.

sam: I was under the impression you were looking for a G and D to go with the EP Weichs.
That combination would work OK for you I think. But as to how the Zyex E and A would work with guts on the G and D I can't say.

I recently tried a Spiro medium E&A on my bass and I'm not so sure. They have a darker pizz sound than I had expected which is not really what I need as my bass has a very dark sound already. They felt a bit too tight, could be because of my long string length but I took them off. The difference in tension between the Spiro A and plain gut D was too much.
I've put on pirastro flat chrome-steel E&A and surprisingly they work quite well. They are a lighter gauge which I can live with and I think that helps them growl a bit more. I don't have a low action, I've got guts on the top 2. But surprisingly they chrome steels work nice. Lighter gauge, lighter tension and a brighter sound which amplifies well with a mic and cuts through the band well. I keep changing my mind but after these findings I think I will try the Evah Weich's E&A as they might be better.

Evah Weich are still darker than Spiro Mittel, but with more sustain than the regular Evahs. I think they work well with guts (except the still higher tension), but probably not on your dark bass.

I'm hoping someone can answer this for me (mark are you out there?) I'm in need of new strings and am leaning towards the Evans. I just want to know, coming from spiro mediums, which set is more similar the Weich or the regular? Thanks.

I would never describe the Weich E as being dull. Springy, ringy...but not dull. The Mittel E has more body and is often mixed with Weichs for the rest.
That combo works for me.
