Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part III

I have a quick question thats totally off topic. I was wondering what the best D string is in peoples opinion. I read posts here and have come to the conclusion that the "best" single strings are
Spiro E, Evah regular A and Oliv G... but what about the poor D string? Anyone have a favorite?

No such thing as "best" of course, but the Eudoxa D is great. So is the G, the A, and the E, though!

I just restringed my DB with new Evah weich strings. What a difference! The E was previously pretty dead (Flexocore 92) especially when bowed, but it now actually sounds pretty nice! The whole bass has much more volume.

I have only "played" the DB for two months and I have not heard a lot of different basses yet. But I do know my bass sounds a lot better now! So this post is nothing more than just sharing my happiness with the new strings :)

Cheers,
Erik

PS: I paid 199 euro for the set

So today my friend let me try her Evahs. She plays Classical and needed to change to solo tuned strings. I put them on today and coming from spiros these are awesome. Just enough pop on the note for pizz and they bow great. Only problem is that the G string sounds a little scratchy under the bow (I only played them for a few hours). Wondering if anyone else has had this happen.

An update, after two years of solid use, the Evah's are off my bass.

Because they are shot. Done. Dead, winding is coming loose.

I got them third hand, and the total used lifespan of them was:

first owner ~18 months
Second ~ two years
Me ~ two years.

Almost six?

I think i could have done a beter job taking care of the windings but they were beyond dead when i got them to begin with.

I think im buying a fresh set in the next month, until then its Helicore Hybrids to get me through.

I will update. I miss these strings terribly.

On my second set of EP Weichs. I sold the bass with the first set, so otherwise I wouldn't be on the second set.

I tried the Oliv G thing. It was so awesome. But after 6 months I started getting some spots where the winding was coming off and I felt like the sound, especially above the octave, was starting to fall off. I ordered and EP Weich to replace it. I'd just feel like a dip explaining to my teacher about how I'm putting $100 strings on my bass every 6 months.

I had a lesson with my old teacher who swore by the Spiro E and A and Oliv D and G. He had that combo for at least 3 years but I think its was much longer (I'd say at least 5-6). I walked into the lesson and found that he had switched the olivs for new spiros. When asked about it he said "They just became a pain in the ass. There was a reason people switched from guts when steel strings came around." Basically they wouldn't last long and he would have to retune every 5 minuets (sometimes in the middle of songs). With the spiros there isn't that problem. He said he was annoyed with the bowing so I recommended the Evah Weich set. I have a Weich set on order and I cant wait till it gets here.

I've had the orchestra Evahs on for about a month and although the arco tone is to die for (much better than spirocores), I miss the sustain from the spiros. The orchestra strings were borrowed from a friend while my Weich set is on the way. I hope that these are a little brighter and have some more sustain. Can anyone tell me about that?

I actually have exactly that on my bass right now ( I'm in the process of changing from mediums to weich and haven't gotten around to the e and a yet). It definitely works, but as with all things string related I think it's pretty bass specific and what seems to be working on my bass won't necessarily be a good match for a different instrument.

I just didn't like the Orchestras. The sound was great but for stuff in the upper position i do not have the technique yet to play them. I may give them another go in six months, but Dominants are giving me everything i need for Arco and Pizz right now. I played through the Prelude to the first Cello Suite on them, and played it pretty decent. I played it much better on the Dominants.

I really wanted to be the guy who said "these strings aren't too stiff, you guys are a bunch of banana boats" but i think my problem isn't just the stiffness but that they would top out at a certain level of energy input, and not get louder.
