Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part III

I am enjoying my Weich Evahs but I'm having trouble with the E and the A string. I find that the E and A string sound very mid rangy when plugged into an amp. Its almost as if someone (most likely a ghost) turns up the treble and mid knobs whenever I play notes on those strings (a lot worse on the E but I can notice it on the A as well). Anyone else have this problem?

I am finding acoustically that the E sounds weak compared to the rest of the set. Anyone notice this? I am thinking of replacing it with a Spiro (which would solve the problem above) but my question is would it mix well? Any suggestions are awesome.

FYI: I have a full set of Spiros that are about a year old so any mixing advice is good. Thanks

You could try the spiro Weich,I have used those with Eva W. and currently Olive D-G. Sounded good, but the stiffness bothered me a little too much. When I added the E-A Eva W. It all worked out and sounded great, balanced sonically with Pizz. Arco, amplified and acoustic. Problem solved ,for now...Each bass is different,so keep trying new strings ,you will find one that will work..:)

After six months on the string hunt, spending too much money and with less than stellar results... I just got a set of Evah Weich and strung them up tonight. Wow. Rich, dark, nice attack, and gorgeous bow tone. They bring out the best qualities of my bass and feel -just right- under the hands. I can't wait to see what they're like in a few weeks.

I'm going to give you some credit and say it's probably the bows fault. My current bow is pretty bad, it's developed a bit of a warp and hasn't been repaired in years. Despite all it's faults, I'm still able to get a great bow sound from these strings, so I'm looking into getting a new bow that won't work against me so much, because I'm in love with the bowed tone of these strings. Try a different bow. I've been finding that even when my technique is lacking, I'm still not getting that tell tale scratch and wispiness that comes from poor bowing technique. They're incredibly forgiving. The past six months I've gone through both light and medium Zyex, very old Obligatos, and a set of Blast Cult Low Lifes. None of them bowed this nicely and were as forgiving with technique. The Obligatos had nice bowed tone, but we're not forgiving to a bad bow or lazy technique.

So I'm soon going to be getting a set of Evahs. I'm interested in seeing how my hybrid bass will fair with light gauge strings, so I'm thinking of getting a set of Weichs. The only thing I'm slightly worried about is that I've heard that the Evah Weichs are brighter than the regulars. I'm looking for a dark string, so will the Weichs settle in dark or are they initially dark, or should I get a set of regulars?

The Evahs are pretty dark compared to Spiro Mittels. I don't remember weichs being brighter than the regulars. That being said, I've used Evah Weich D and G with Spiro Weich E and A with good results.

I've had the Evah lights on my bass now for nearly 6 months. Prior to that, I had Obligatos. They are similar in my estimation. I play jazz, both pizz and arco and I'm looking for a sound similar to the recordings of the 50s and 60s - not too much sustain, somewhat dark sound. I like both strings but find the Evah's a bit darker and easier to get a nice vibrant tone arco. I might try another set of Obligatos when the Evah's wear out, but for now, I have to say that I think the Evah's are better for my playing goals and the tone I want to hear.

Spiro weich E, with 15 month old EP weich A and D, 9 month old Oliv G here....

Ordered a mittel E to to see if I can't get a stronger fundamental for pizzicato. Was giving the weich everything I had and I don't know, the bass wasn't giving it back.
I kinda look at the E string as being a separate instrument sometimes, especially in the orchestra.

As for the Pirastro upper end of the bass, jeez, I guess the EPs and Oliv are starting to sound kind of dead. I play an hour a day on average. I can't tell if they're worn out or if I'm just getting tired of the sound. Feel like I'm working really hard for the pizz sound I want. The sound under the bow is nice once it gets going, but I swear the strings spoke faster back in the day. Can someone confirm my feeling about this? I'm still under the impression that this mixed set is for me. I was this close to pulling the trigger on a whole set of mittels (never tried a whole set before) or superflexibles (love them on my teacher's bass).

EDIT: Whassup Tom!

Based on my experience, I agree that the tonal balance of the Oblis is akin to the Evah weichs. For me, that's where it ends. The Oblis always sounded fine in my living room but they would give up on the bandstand. I'd dig in, they'd wimp out. The Evahs weichs had a much more powerful sound on my bass, with that great front-end "pop."

Have you tried the Evah E? On my bass, the Evah E was thunderous with a powerful fundamental. I'm now using a full set of Spiro mitts. The Spiro mitt E, while good, doesn't do what the Evah E did. I gave up the Evahs and switched to the Spiro mitts after an injury. I actually like them on my bass, which tends to be a darker-sounding cannon. The inherent brightness of the Spiros combines well with that and the overall tone is hardly bright.

You know what drurb, I used the EP E a couple years ago, but it was on another bass. Can you believe it actually slipped my mind to consider the E this time around? I'm going to try the spiro E, but the EP weich E will be plan B. I love the A. Haha.

EDIT: I got the mittel E on there and it's great. Way huger than the weich E under the bow.

I'm in the market for new strings on my bass. From all the reading I'm doing I'm considering Zyex or Evah (medium in either case).

My bass is a 2008 Upton Hybrid, however I'm a noivce DB player. Not playing out with it at this time but generally not thrilled with the tone, sounds a bit mettalic to me and I'd like a more organic, woody tone. Need more practice I know. Anyway I bought the bass used and the strings on it are Helicore Hybrids . Dark tones appeal to me. I practice both arco and pizz. My reference in tone in my head is Brian Bromberg on the album Wood, especially the Come Together track.

thoughts?

From what I know, Bromberg has been using Spirocore Weichs for a long time. I've never personally used them, but many praise these strings. I can add input on the Zyex and Evahs though. I started out with a full set of Zyex medium on my Shen hybrid. The E string was weak so I swapped it for a Spiro Mittel E. I had them on for about 4 months. I eventually took them off though. I found them to be actually too bright rather than dark which is what I want as well. They were also felt really stiff. Some people have had great experiences though and this is just what happened with my bass. I switched to Evah Weich A D G, in August, and kept the Spiro E and I am happy with how they sound and play. From what I've heard, the Evah mediums are quite high in tension (higher than standard medium tension) so many go for the Weichs. About the only difference you'll notice in the Weichs is that they will feel thinner than what you're used to. Overall, my money is for the Evah Weichs, but your bass will know what it wants.
