Ever Been Recognized?

Not sure if this is more for the Off Topic forum.

I live in a town of about 35,000 and last week I was recognized twice at Wal Mart. Once by a couple that ased if I was the bass player for _____ Band and again at the check out by some old dude. We don't even play in this town very often.

I found it a little weird and embarassing. I thanked them and told them where we were playing next.

Has it ever happened to you. How did you handle it?

I have a strict no autograph no photo policy. If you let one you have to let them all.

My free time away from "The Rock and Roll Spotlight"™©® is important to me.

I'm not a jerk about it. I usally just smash their camera and say "Sorry,no pictures".
Thay usually get the point.

I went to go see the Adicts about 3 years ago. Someone came up to me and asked "Are you the bass player from That Band?" (I forgot the name of the band so let's call 'em "That Band".)
I had never heard of the band and told her no. 3 more people that night asked me if I was from That Band. A week or so later 2 lovely ladies rushed over to me at Target and told me how cool That Band was. They were so excited to meet someone from That Band. I went along with it. I ended up taking a few photos with them and signed an autograph.

So have I been recognized...sorta.

one time a band i went to see recognized me from my bass clef tattoo. saw Wednesday 13 in Myrtle Beach, then 2 years later again in Allentown PA and he was like "good to see you again man, Myrtle Beach right? I recognized the tattoo."

that was pretty awesome

also i've been recognized at the post office and the haircuttery

I had a guy ask me if I ever played at the Wright bar. I hadn't played that place in probably 10 years or more! I said as much, and he told me that I was indeed the guy he was thinking of.

It has happened to me on several occassions.. It is pretty cool. However, what happens more often is people will see me out wearing a band shirt. They approach me telling me about how many times they have seen the band and ask me if I have caught them lately. When I tell them that I just saw the band (my band) just last night or however long ago and it was a great show. When we travel out of the state, my response is that I caught the band over in whatever state and chuckle as I walk away. My wife hates that I don't tell them that I am in the band (founding member actually), but it is pretty funny that these people have seen me play bunches of times, but don't know I am in the band!

I've always felt it was a trade off. afterall if you signed up for it then that sort of thing very much goes along with the territory.
Always trips me out when celebs go crazy at the camera man/woman.....From a marketing stand point if they didn't want your autograph or picture then you got a entirely different problem.
I get the privicy thing as well. it can be a real pain, back in the day when my band first took off I got kicked out of my parents house (which I thought to be a safe haven)
when a group of drunk girls broke in and stole my laundry.
God bless my parents....I put them through hell!

It happens quite regularly to me since my band is well known in our region and our photo is also in newspaper, TV, and website ads for some shows. However, when it happens out of town is when it seems to have more importance because it means the people probably saw us play somewhere and they take the time acknowledge the band and I appreciate that.
