never heard of it, put me in the yt crowd. wouldn't bother me but i'm a complete prostitute. the one that kind of bothers me is pour some sugar on me. and anything by aerosmith. i play 'em like i LOVE 'em though.

HAHA! This one is on our play list! We've played it at every gig we've done in the year plus that we've been together.
Eventually we're gonna spice it up by mashing it with "777-9311" by The Time. Drummer is still working on it.
Tom Petty's "Free Falling." The song is so bad The Heartbreakers wouldn't do it and it ended up on his solo album.

I really hate Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones) but played it in my last band and it was surprisingly more fun to play than to listen to. We put our little spin on it though and it is a crowd pleaser.

I struggled to find a decent band in a new town and finally found some people who could play. 2nd tryout between me and another guy and they trot this out. I go nope, let's move on. They go, no really let's play it. I say, really, what else you got? They say we done.
And I want to thank them. They never went anywhere and the band I found after plays most every weekend.
And before any of the whiny aggro "just play it" tude comes out, I don't do this for anything approaching a living anymore. If you don't enjoy it, why bother. If you do, that's another story entirely

IT'S JUST MUSIC, GROW UP!!! If you're getting payed to play a certain song and it's getting requested by the audience "PLAY IT." If it's not politically, morally or religiously offensive then to not play it is a mark of an amateurs, IMHO. I can't begin to tell you how many songs I get called to play that I can't stand, but I make it my own and I'm mature enough to get beyond my personal dislikes and play to both the crowd and the paying party.

I don't get this attitude. Certainly one gets past the learning stage, calluses, frustration of learning an instrument because you have some non-financial motive (passion). Then, once you reach a certain point, it is "just music" and anything is worth learning and playing even if it is horrid if people like it and you are getting paid?
Hm. Replace the sampled strings with some good grindy heavy-duty synth work (Gaga, Perry, et al), and I'd play it no problem. I actually like dance/synth material. This one reminds me a little of Teenage Dream, one of my favorite kick-ass Perry songs -- well, at least the choruses. Since we already play a lot of that genre anyway, it wouldn't be that far of a reach to play CMM w/o puking on my boots, as long as we beefed it up.
I figure playing what people want to hear is what I signed up for when I decided to do this for a (partial) living.
Also, 43M YT plays on the lyrics version alone have to count for something.

I can't help but wonder how many times prostitutes the world over have said the same thing...
I had never heard the song before, so I Youtubed it. I don't like the song much, but I don't see how it's any worse than your typical pop song. I've never been in a cover band, but it seems like this is exactly the kind of music you'd be used to playing.
If you're playing music for fun, then by all means refuse to play the song and deal with the consequences. But if it's a job, you need to buck up and remember that pretty much every job makes you do things you hate. Your job as a cover band musician is to entertain people and play songs that they want to hear. If you don't want to do that, your band leader will find someone who does.

I would be out of that band in a hurry! I can't bring myself to listen to that song as most of the TalkBass community agrees.
While I don't like that song, the ending of the video amused me (I skipped ahead).
