Every Amp Has Too Much Overdrive At Loud Volume

Edit: And I want to clarify, that when I ran my SVT-2 through the 810, I had the same problem. So how would swapping my 115 for a 410 be an improvement over and 810 other than the closed cabinet sounding better to my ears?

a 4x10 has more cone surface (cone surface = more air movement = more perceived Volume) than a 1x15 and like speakers generally sound better with more like speakers. I.E. 2x15 or 4x12 or 8x10 but mixing can be hit or miss due to phasing issues. I hope this helps, Dude. Cheers.

+1. and since you were able to get an 810 rig to fart out, you will have no choice but to use two of them or turn down. or buy yourself a good pa system style rig. you've obviously got far greater volume needs than a single 810 can deliver. even an 810 has limits. you're going to have to make a decision whether you want to hump all that gear or learn how to play at a volume that doesn't make baby jesus cry.

It's not that it's not loud enough. It's that it's not clean enough for how loud I want to be.

Edit: JimmyM, I don't think the cab is farting. It's just overdriving.

Edit 2:

Cabs are often rated based upon the amount of power it takes to melt the voice coil of the speakers within it. It's a marketing gimmick. Usually the speakers have reached their maximum excursion by the time you hit half of the cab's max rated power. See JimmyM's rant on it here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=724825

IIRC, that's rated at max power. Plus it would eat those cabs alive.

Since the output is parallel and I'm running into two cabs, wouldn't it just be putting 150 watts into each cab?

Edit 4: I'm going to check out the 1001rb-II. What are some good cabs to try and pair it with? Would the SVT-810e be able to handle it?

I'm sure someone mentionned this before but have you checked your gain structure?
Any tube amp with the master close to maxed out will get power tube distortion, if you don't have a separate gain to adjust you'll need another amp IMO, preferably SS and lots of watts.
I can't imagine hearing the drummer over a cranked SVT through an 810...

The GK sbx cabs are very "clean" cabs, they have a lot of definition and can take a pounding. If you like more of a hi-fi sound I don't know if the Ampeg 810 is your best bet. I would also try a Mesa M9 as well as the 1001RB. I had the 1001 and an M6 and I found the M6 to be quite a bit cleaner the GK had that signature growl, the Mesa also runs 2ohms safely so you could run 4 8ohm 410s if you wanted.

A GK 1001 and the Neo 4x12 will be very loud, and whilst GK doesn't really do 'clean', it will get a lot closer than an Ampeg.

Louder and cleaner would be a mic channel strip (or a clean preamp of your choice), a big PA power amp and a 'clean' cab such as a Barefaced Big One (or two big ones) or an EA or Acme.

Yes.

Edit 4: I'm going to check out the 1001rb-II. What are some good cabs to try and pair it with? Would the SVT-810e be able to handle it?

Yes, they can handle it. My band has our "bassist" (a jackass who's mooching off of us, living in my house, and not paying for anything because my brother is so enamored with him) using my bass and rig, including my 1001RB-II into my SVT810E. My idiot brother kept cranking the bass knob "to make it sound better" and the cab even held up to that. I boosted the low mids and cut bass and it annihilated the rest of us in volume. This is with 2 guitar 100w tube heads + 4x12s and a very heavy drummer who often gets covered up by the guitars.

As an aside, an efficient cab is good too. A power rating of 100+db@1w/1m is best. The Ampeg 810E isn't bad at 100. My Genz is rated at 103 so at the same amount of power run into it (say 100w) it will sound louder than my 810E.

Edit: Looking at the manual for your RBX series (here [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) they are already just about as efficient as the 810E so using just one 810E and more power might not be enough. You might need 2 810E's and either a 1001RB or a 2001RB head to mate to them. That is insane. I agree with everyone else about checking your volume levels. When I OD'd my SVT-II into my 810E, my ears hurt from that rehearsal WITH earplugs. Save your hearing and your back and talk about volume levels with the band.

It's not that it's not loud enough. It's that it's not clean enough for how loud I want to be.

to me that's the same thing. that is, IF it's the cab that's doing it. now i'm not so sure.

well just remember the law of getting clean sounds loud:

1. lots of wattage so you can have headroom

2. lots of air displacement from your cab rig

as far as specific gear, maybe someone else can advise you. never played a gig in my life that required that much volume, and i've played in some very loud rock bands in my day.

Maybe on of these...

As what? A doorstop?

Seriously, you're underpowered if you're looking for loud. A thousand watts and a couple good 410s will fix you right up.

Get a direct box and use your PA. Tell your drummer and guitar player to quiet down.
Extream high levels of sound can damage your ears and the people your playing for.
I've seen bands in clubs playing to 10 people because its too freaking loud!:rollno:

Get a pair of Bergantino NV610 cabs and a 2000 watt power amp that runs stable at 2Ω since the NV610 are each 4Ω, i.e.2Ω combined in parallel. Stack the cabs vertically. Pick whatever preamp suits your taste. It's better to have a surplus of power than not enough.

I went into GC today and tried out the 1001rb-II. I really wasn't a fan of the sound. I think my favorite idea from this thread was to run an SVP preamp into a power amp. All of these amps are getting loud enough, they're just not maintaining the clean tone that it has at a lower volume.

Which power amps do you guys recommend in the $400 range? (Including used)

And take a picture of that awesomeness. (two NV610s stacked vertically).

Man, I'd rock 2000 watts into two NV610s all day, even though I hate solid state, I'd make a exception in that case.

I don't know squat about power amps, but I know Crown and QSC are two brands highly regarded here on TB. Do a search on Crown and QSC here and see what recommendations come up.

The (only) advantage I can see to the pre/power setup is that you can go bi-amp crazy, and you can taste-test a bunch of preamps 'til you find the one you like. Power is power, so just find some leadsleds (used power amps) that are solid. (If you're really a clean freak, you might wind up being a bi-amp guy).

If you're going to play monster loud, you need a monster amp. Two of the best ever are the SVT and this baby... I've played outdoor stadiums with one of these and no PA support and it never broke up.

Of course, there are those nice new high wattage amps and cabs. I'm sure modern technology has made the package smaller and better in some ways. I'm just sayin' ....if you want to feel your pants flutter in the breeze from the air movin' out of your cabinet this is a fun way to go.

P.S. At one time I had two of these cabinets with a 2-15 bassman cabinet on top of each. There is no guitar rig that will threaten to overpower that arrangement.

another P.S. Did I mention I've lost a fair amount of hearing?
