For some reason I am rarely excited about playing shows. I do look forward to them, but not visibly excited. Every year I play one of the private parties at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo BBQ cookoff, this weekend, and and I get Giddy like a 5 year old on Christmas morning...:hyper: and I don't know why. This is a huge event, a few hundred BBQ teams, thousands of people walking by listening, free BBQ and Beer. I look forward to this every year. This show means more to me than any others through out the year and I've played some large shows in th past. This is the only time that I go over every song in my head in the days before the show. Am I crazy?

My band is doing a local community festival thing this weekend. The drummer and I are both pretty excited about it as it's a good paying gig, only play 1 set, it's in the afternoon, so not a late night and going to be to a crowd completely different to what we normally play to (the usual drunk bar people).

It means we can throw a normal night's intensity and energy into one set without worrying about being dead come the last set. :)

I've only ever got really excited when it's a show with a big national or international act, or sometimes just the first real show when you've got a new band. I think the most excited I've ever been for gigs was :

1) opening for Jonathan Richman in 2001
2) playing a big showcase in L.A. (I live in Baltimore) International Pop Overthrow 1999
3) opening for The Old 97s and Gigolo Aunts 1996 or '97 (?)
4) first time playing at the 9:30 Club in DC 1997
5) opening for The Records and Lotion 1998
6) opening for Mojo Nixon 2001 or 2002

I'm only in a classic rock cover band, but I get fired up for every show. It's the most fun I can legally have without my wife being involved! When I lose that enthusiasm it will be time to hang it up.

+1 If you lose your passion for gigging.....maybe time to take up golf. I'm an old fart in a similar classic rock cover band and still love playing shows. I love hustling the gigs, promoting the gigs, the performance, making new fans, watching folks cram $10's and $20's in the tip jar and interacting with crazy audience members after the show. It's mostly all good and don't even mind lugging around a truck load of sound and lighting equipment. Still having a ton of fun.
