A family member who is a renowned film producer was recently asked, "How's business?"
His response was that it was terrible as everyone was making superhero movies. Hadn't thought about it like that. It's almost true.
One of the things that really bugs me is when two films come out that are basically the same:
Battleship & Pacific Rim, Olympus Has Fallen & White House Down, Red Planet & Mission to Mars, After Earth & Oblivion....
It shows a massive lack of imagination. "If you liked Armageddon, you'll love Deep Impact..."
I'm also very disillusioned by the continual remaking of classic films. It's the "cover band" of the film industry.
I know the special effects of today are amazing, and the things they can do with makeup are phenomenal, but spare me the reboot.
Are they simply running out of story ideas?
I agree that A Quiet Place was genre twisting, and a pleasant surprise.
Here's a fun experiment for you: If you have Netflix or Amazon Prime, look how many films there are that feature a group of people going into the woods only to be systematically killed off by something nasty. Aliens, bears, local crazies, demons, cryptids, each other etc. In the woods.
There are literally dozens of them. How do the filmmakers come up with this stuff?
I like British, and European movies. Usually they don't have the big budgets for the car chases, explosions, mega-disasters, and animation so they will rely on plot, characters, suspense, acting...
