Every movie is terrible.

Over the weekend I watched “A Quiet Place”. It was not terrible. In fact it’s the best horror movie I’ve seen in a very long time. Maybe the best movie I’ve seen of any genre in quite a while. Very original and unexpected.

Edit

Solo: A Star Wars Story cost $275M to make. It was sort of ok.

A Quiet Place cost $17M to make. It’s 10x the movie made at a small fraction of the cost.

We saw Black Panther last night. Amazon was having a half off sale, so it was $2.99. I'm glad we didn't see it in the theaters, though it was mildly entertaining. The writing was awful, though the effects were pretty good.

I'm also glad I didn't pay to see it in a movie theater. Probably the most overrated super hero movie of all time. The villain was painfully annoying but I thought the actor was good in Creed.

I suppose this is more my problem than the movie industry's problem, but the illogical choices and plot holes almost ruin that movie for me, which sucks cuz it was good. Good acting and a good story. I'm sitting there watching it and trying to enjoy it. Really wanting to enjoy it but WHY WOULD THEY HAVE A BABY IN A WORLD WITH NOISE MONSTERS??? Why not camp out by the waterfall near the due date? Where were they getting electricity? Generators are loud. I could go on but it's 4:49 and I have to get ready for work.

And black panther stunk. A weak story, mediocre acting and cgi that looks like it came out of the 90s. I don't care how groundbreaking it was. It stunk.

Very good comics

I'd argue some of Marvel's strongest ever storylines have been in T'Challa scripts.

Otherwise I have no idea what Movies suck as the last film I remember seeing was Lord of the Rings

Yep, for sure

I understand Comics = Movie Industry money

But yeah despite having a prodigious comic collection I can't be arsed watching a film of it
Some of them are good. Some are horrific. Logan was excellent. If you haven't seen any of the 50 comic book movies to come out since the 90s you should definitely watch that one. It's just a good movie. The fact that they have super powers is incidental. That's what a movie needs. Super powers aren't a substitute for a story or good characters.

The electricity was the biggest puzzler. I accepted that somehow they just had it without any explanation.

EDIT: I did a little googling and found this. Note the solar panels.

I tried to make it through the marathon that is The Watchers directors cut. I hadn't seen the original version so figured what the hell.

I made it half way before I tapped out. Holy crap this was a snails paced train wreck that was trying to be Sin City but failed. Tried to be a decent Marvel style action movie. And failed. It took itself far too serious and not seriously enough at the same time.

The only thing I remember about this movie?

Blue penis.

Yeah.

Thanks for that.... jackwagons.

A family member who is a renowned film producer was recently asked, "How's business?"
His response was that it was terrible as everyone was making superhero movies. Hadn't thought about it like that. It's almost true.

One of the things that really bugs me is when two films come out that are basically the same:
Battleship & Pacific Rim, Olympus Has Fallen & White House Down, Red Planet & Mission to Mars, After Earth & Oblivion....
It shows a massive lack of imagination. "If you liked Armageddon, you'll love Deep Impact..."

I'm also very disillusioned by the continual remaking of classic films. It's the "cover band" of the film industry.
I know the special effects of today are amazing, and the things they can do with makeup are phenomenal, but spare me the reboot.
Are they simply running out of story ideas?

I agree that A Quiet Place was genre twisting, and a pleasant surprise.

Here's a fun experiment for you: If you have Netflix or Amazon Prime, look how many films there are that feature a group of people going into the woods only to be systematically killed off by something nasty. Aliens, bears, local crazies, demons, cryptids, each other etc. In the woods.
There are literally dozens of them. How do the filmmakers come up with this stuff?

I like British, and European movies. Usually they don't have the big budgets for the car chases, explosions, mega-disasters, and animation so they will rely on plot, characters, suspense, acting...

I've recently realised The Score and Heist, both from 2001, are not the same movie.
Unlike I previously thought. Because they kinda are anyway.

This will fix all the problems with lousy movies!

LONDON (AP) -- Sit at the back of the movie theater, and it's possible to see the appeal of ScreenX, the latest attempt to drag film lovers off the sofa and away from Netflix.

Instead of one screen, there are three - one at the front, and two on the sides - to add to the immersive experience you can't get from the home TV.

Tom Cruise negotiating contract for any film, in any genre, in any timeline:
TC: So......where do I ride the motorcycle?
Director: erm.....this is a pirate movie set in the eighteenth century.
TC: Can I get a vintage motorcycle?
Director: You're on a small ship most of the time, and there are no motorcycles of that period.
TC: Perhaps I can make one when we get marooned on the island...
D: Sure, Tom....[sigh]..whatever you want
TC: I like to ride motorcycles in films.

Lost was a really good show, I didn't know they made it into a movie.

Could you meet me in the stereotype thread, sir?

;)

Let me make a little side trip in this thread and introduce a theater near where I live.

It's called the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, Illinois. The Paramount Theatre, also known as the Paramount Arts Center, opened in Aurora, Illinois in 1931. It was designed by Rapp and Rapp in the Art Deco style with Venetian elements. Over the years, it has hosted films, plays, musicals, concerts, comedy shows, and other acts.[1] The structure was restored in the 1970s and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.[2] It is part of the Stolp Island Historic District.

To me, the best part of the theater is "Classic Movie Mondays". Every Monday, they show a classic movie with ticket price of $1.

Last year I went to see "The Wizard of Oz". Like most people, I've seen the movie probably dozens of times, but almost always on TV with commercials, but sometimes on recorded medium.

This experience was totally different. It really felt like I was back in time when the movie first came out. I loved it.
