Not Caig Deoxit, but I do use a cleaner :) Not that I think my Monster Cables fall into the $$$ category (well maybe they do, but since neutriks are $6 apiece here in Sweden, and good, flexible instrumentcable is hard to come by, I think $50 is acceptabele for a cable) but cleaning should always be done.

A colleague of mine once said, when we questioned the benefits of his new, very expensive, speaker cables: "Who cares if the sound benefits? I like having hose style cables behind my speakers!"
Kind of like a spalted surabaya burl top: Won't make the bass any better, but it looks cool. ;)

I have a cable with arrows on the jacks, it's directional copper and you're supposed to always plug it in with the arrows facing the amp so you don't disrupt the crystal alignment. Over time the crystals align even more and the tone improves. It's a very nice cable.

It was also a gift, I could never fall for that kind of crap with my own money :)

It is quite easy to demonstrate with a cheap oscilloscope that machines are far superior to humans when it comes to discerning small fluctuations in audio signals. It is a bit of a logical leap of faith to then state that you can hear differences that can't be measured in any lab.

I think you're in error to assume that you can only be fooled in one direction. Placebo's can also cause side effects and it's not the only way our mind can be fooled.

I think any test would be more of the jack connection than cable quality. Any real test has to remove the weakest link in the chain and bypass those flimsy things. A little dust, humidity and the whole thing goes to pot.

No that part is true. You do have to plug the cable in tip first to align the crystals. It doesn't sound nearly as good if you try to plug the cable in with the tip facing out.

This is a fascinating thread. I own an Evidence cable. When I bought it, the proprietor contacted me and was really interested in whether or not I could hear the difference between his cable and the cable I was using. Honestly, I cannot. I think that my hearing is just not that acute. I also own cables by George L, Monster, and Bayou. I can tell the difference between crappy cables and the more expensive ones, but not much difference between the brands that I have mentioned. But I would probably use the Evidence for recording, just in case somebody else can tell the difference.

The technical arguments are also interesting. I have a Ph.D. in Engineering, but it's the wrong kind of engineering, so I cannot add to that discussion.

We could resolve this debate by getting Eric Johnson to do a blindfold test with these different brands of cable. Didn't he say he could hear the difference in brands of batteries in his overdrive pedal? :cool:
