Extended Range Bass Club Thread (Part 2)

Number request! I have a few basses, but the most strings (for now) are on my 5 string Fender J. I'm currently working up my chops on that and my Breedlove acoustic BG while I save up for the 8 or 9 string I'd really love to have for solo jazz and funk stuff. In the meanwhile, I'm also reading through all of these postings and learning as much as I can. Does that qualify me for a number, being an admirer and aspiring ERB player?

All i can say now is that it sounds great. There is a lot of versatility from the electronics package. However this is my first fretless bass and i'm not great at getting the tones i want out of the bass. I know they are there because I can hear some notes ring out fine, but my fretless technique and especially my intonation is currently non-existent. The innate tone without EQ does sound rather manring-ish on the high strings, but remarkably similar to my Sonus on the bass strings (loud, middish, authoritative and punchy). The sustain is ridiculous - the strings can ring out for 20+ seconds usefully.

I didn't find the strings to be more or less springy than the Sonus. We're using the same gauges.

Action is ridiculously low, something like 2mm at the 24th position. Extremely comfortable to play, more than my Sonus. Build quality is excellent, but we already knew that. No neck dive, hangs comfortably.

I'm primarily a church bassist so I'll be taking it out for its first worship rehearsal this week, so I've got my work cut out for me regarding intonation and stuff.

...it appears a lot bigger than I imagined it would be. Somehow I still can't wrap my head around how the bass case is positively tiny, while the bass feels, looks, and weighs like a full sized bass (this one is 9.9 lbs). The bridge, for one, is absolutely massive. The portability has gone way up, however. The headstock (what's left of it) no longer sticks out above my head catching on doorways and public transport, and the 1 lb weight saving over a few hours 3 times a week can really add up.

Man, I love the BTB 6-strings. That whole BTB series is just leagues ahead of any other bass I've ever played from them, and the 35" scale on the 5- and 6-string basses is a nice touch.

Here are the first 3 beauties of mine. The black H&S has a red fretless twin, which is at the moment not with me. The other two are self-made. The Paduk "Ghost" (the red) fully, the P-Bass from spare parts...

It was an attempt to get the upper register to be thicker and less nasal. The high E is a .025 and I might try out a .020, but I think it was a success and Cliff's 32" scale B sounds just fine.

That is great to hear, I know how much of a challenge that must be. I remember hearing about when Trip Wamsley got his 0 radiused, 32 inch, 8 string Alembic made and trying to make sure the B was strong in a shorter scale.

I've only tried one CB (@ the LowEnd), so I can't remember if the headstock is angled or not.
