Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

Wow! Some really gorgeous basses here. It's important to keep perspective on one's ultimate goal, though. If it's to be unique, a showman, a star, etc., fine. If it's to enjoy steady work as a solid bass player, 4 is plenty and 5 is fine.

Way back, I was more of a Hot-dogging attention seeker when I playing 4s.
I grew up and learned to simply "play the gig" .
Just by coincidence, it was about the time I started adding strings.

I will once again refer to the oh-so-thoughtful OP/mission statement:
--Another huge misconception is that ERB guys are all soloing/tapping/shredding wankers that don't care about the groove. This may be a good opportunity to have the masses find out that, in fact, most ERB guys are groovers first and foremost. Don't let the YouTube vids fool you, there is a whole lot more to extended range than playing video game themes. ---

Spade,

You didn't owe me all that, but I'm glad to know your story. Let's keep in touch. And since you're in Omaha, tell Warren Buffett that Jon Liebman says hello!

LOL, contrary to popular belief, 99% of Omahans haven't met Warren and probably never will. LOL, most who meet him in public like waiters, typically note that he's a bad tipper. :p Wealthy beyond belief, one of the cheapest dudes alive, hence the 30+ year old wardrobe!

LOL, no biggie on my recent autobiography. I type fast and this is the very short version. Trust me, there are plenty of guitarded temper tantrums and cry babies, as well as the usual "all active basses sound sterile" and "a bass like that will never sound good in the mix", etc. I think an even quicker explaination is that I love music, but lack the patience to deal with a lot of musicians. :p

My ERBs enjoying the spring afternoon. :)

Every time I read someone post a thought like this I count my blessings to have been able to play with the types of musicians I have been associated with over these many years :D. Sure, there have been a few players that were a PITA now and then, but in general I have been very lucky to get situated with bands/musicians that are cool people, too ...

And I'm equally blessed to not have anyone questioning my choice of instrument .... they simply don't care what it is or what it looks like. In any band I have ever been involved with (including big bands), the bass has always had a very identifiable presence, so as long as I'm adding value to the band it doesn't matter how many strings there are on the bass or how the bass is equipped. In fact, it seems that the more bass options I provide by using ERB's, the more work becomes available to me. Again, as long as I add value, no one cares ....

Hi!

Thanks so much for being so stereotypical in your stereotyping!

How refreshing!

:hyper:

:scowl:

...you haven't heard any ONE of us in a gigging situation. Until you have, keep your OPINION on it's leash, hmmkay?

;)

FYI, my background is in old-school Motown, Cajun (grew up in NOLA), and Latin (I was the road bassist for Tito Puente, Jr for 2 years) musics, with a great love of things like Rush and progressive (REALLY progressive) rock, as well as jazz.

My goal is singular when I play: Make the ladies dance.

I choose to do that with a 6 most times (I also own an NS Design CR5M), but that has no bearing on how I play, and I'd thank you to keep that in mind as you open your mouth (or hit the "Submit Reply" button) in the future.

Thanks.

LOL, I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my chronic bad luck, but I'm amazed with the complete lack of progress I've made over the years, especially when plotted against all of the BS. It was very odd that every band in town would e-mail my friend Tim and he'd send them my way since he had other thigns going on, but ZERO actually e-mailed me, which is probably indicative that the rumors and black-listed status isn't paranoia.

I'm hoping my summer devoted to road racing is fairly rewarding. Fortunately, I don't need to worry about anyone but myself when logging the miles and racing.

now, now, gard. no need for that. this thread was going along way too well for us to not expect to have some "self-appointed voice of reason" come in and express their unwelcome, unwarranted bigotry under the guise of "sage advice". one of the crosses we must bear, apparently.

btw, i know it's been a while, but when you played at cabo wabo with sammy haggar, what did -he- think of your 6?

You're quite right, of course, how silly of me to expect, as one one the "unwashed masses" to think that one of our superiors wouldn't deign to notice our transgressions and feel the magnanimous desire to direct our attention to said musical failure.

:ninja:

Man, speaking of resurrection!

;)

Sammy had no comment, but his band members were all quite supportive of my bald board excursions in that situation.

I must admit, at the time, I was beating the snot out of a slightly different ERB:

coulda sworn you had a 6 back then, when you came to one of the atl get togethers at hammy's.

Oh, I did, I had a pair of neck through 6's that were built by some buddies down in Orlando, but I was using the Zon at the time of the Sammy/Cabo gig. Of course, as soon as I got the bass on the left in my post with photos, all bets were off, that bass is frightening....
