Nothing too fancy :)
Gets the job done though, my school jazz band director isn't too crazy about it... lol

This thread is sick! I have never owned an extended range bass, but some of these are making it tempting. There are some really nice basses in this thread.

Question... what's the lowest that anyone tunes their bass? I see some have a low F# and maybe even a C#? Is that even audible? Just curious. I have never had the pleasure of playing more than a 7 string.

If you want to hear a perfectly audible C# check out Jauqo III-X. There are some threads on here with links to his music.

I have a 82 Ibanez Blazer setup as a Subcontra tuned C F Bd Ed, I tried having it at BEAD for a while but it was a little TOO floppy for me.

Did that C# fit through the bridge without modifying it? Also, I did a bit of math (inches to centimeters) and a .200 C# came out almost as thick as the ball end itself , or at least the ball end on my D'addarios (I now noticed other strings with larger diameter, plastic ball ends). The reason I'm asking is because I want to get a C#-C set for my 8 and drop the F (I knew it was greed that made me say 8 instead of 7 to the luthier:D), but I'm guessing the string thru bridge (the saddle, actually) and the ferrule will give me quite the headache.

No it fit through the hole just fine, no modding to the bridge, all I had to do was widen the nut slots and adjust the truss rod.

Most amps will be fine- something with a little clarity as opposed to an old Sunn tube amp (for example) may allow you to hear the subtleties between strings a lot better. Most cabs will work fine as well- check out the frequency ranges of them if that's a concern to you (you may want to avoid a sealed 2x15 as your only cab for example :D)

That's exactly what I wanted :D Thank you very much.

Question, what would I have to look for in a amplifier so that everything I play on said seven string bass is audible?

look at whatever you like the tone of... personally I use an AMP BH-250 (250 watt head from the early 80s) into a Bag End 2x12" cab (no stinkin tweeters). I'll be hopefully replacing the solid state head with a home made 100 watt tube head based on the Hiwatt DR103 from the early 70s.

I had an old Sunn tube head... I'd be using it with my 7 if I still had it ;)

You could run your 7 into a Crate 10w guitar amp and it would still sound great if you put your KOT between them :D

:D

Seriously old Sunn and Hiwatt tube amps were all General purpose and work well within their usable output range with modernish cabs.

The one I'm building will not handle a heavy handed drummer or a wall of guitar stacks... but it will (hopefully) meet my volume and tone needs. I'm planning a radial JDX for speaker level DI and a slave out for a second cab (most likely a powered BE) for if I need more.

I have a old sunn tube head and it is a very clear amp and responds to dynamics better then any other amp I've tried, that being said it doesn't have the headroom for sub tunings but then it is 60 watts and over forty years old.

I agree about the cabs with you, sealed 2X15 and sub tunings will rattle a SVT off the cab, I almost lost mine do to this once.

Personally you just can't beat a 18" mixed with something smaller like a 2X15" or a 2X12", I guess you could use something with 10"s in it if you actually like the sound of 10"s that is;)

I know that some of the players in this thread are relatively new to ERB's, so it's quite possible that you've never seen a Conklin MEU 7 string. Denson Angulo just recently posted some pics and info at extendedrangebassist.com, so I thought I'd throw the pics in here:

This has always been a very interesting instrument to me, basically a strap-on upright (MEU = Mobile Electric Upright I think ... something like that). I don't know a great deal about these basses, and very few were made, but it's a cool looking axe.

Perhaps John Turner knows a bit more about these basses ...
