Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

So how many of you run a low F#? My Conklin GT-7 came in yesterday and I got to noodle around with it last night. I don't think I appreciated before just how incredible the B string is. It's so tight and punchy that I'm wondering if it could handle an F# decently well. Any opinions? If you have an F#, does it actually get use?

I have a low F# on my Knuckle Quake. It's a 39.5" scale bass, so the low F# is about as tight as the B string on a 34" scale fiver. So far, I'm finding that my ear is the limiting factor. I hear the low A as a solid musical pitch, but when I go to the G or F# below that, it starts to sound like this huge low frequency noise to me, not so much like a musical note.

But I'm definitely finding uses for that low A, and I suspect that as time goes by my ear will adjust and I'll start to find places to use the lower tones as well. I went through a similar process with the low B years ago when I got my first 5 string -- at first I mostly went for the D at the 3rd fret, but eventually I got used to the rest of the range.

i actually have gotten to the point in my current project where i use the low f# in pretty much every song.

i'll probably be re-stringing a few more of my 7's to be low f# equipped. (currently 2 of my 7s and both my 8's have low f#).

I'm thinking of making a trade...my Rob Allen MB-2 fretless 5 for an STR fretted 6. I guess as I play a 5 string right now I'm in the club, but I think a 6 really puts me in the club. I don't really think of a 5 string as extended any more. It is fairly standard in a lot of music.

Sure :D

OMG what have I gotten myself into. Just played my new Conklin GT-7 last night for 2 back to back worship services and wow does this thing sing. I didn't expect the neck to be this smooth, playable and fast. The band was totally blown away by the looks but when we started playing all eyes and ears were on me. Still have a lot to learn but enjoying the journey so far and its only been one day.

I don't know if anyone has said it but the whole Jaco only needed four strings doesn't make sense to me.

Sure Jaco sounded amazing on a four fretless. Which reminds me, Jaco also didn't need frets. So why do bassists all also play fretted basses?

Jaco didn't have a low B string, maybe I want one? Just maybe I like the sound.

I think people who use Jaco to bash other bassists are musically ignorant to the ERB.

Sorry about the rant, its been bubbling up inside for months now. :)

Here is my two cents worth. In regards to "extended range:".... many associate that term with the number of strings on a bass (6 or more). I'm not convinced that the number of strings determines the "extended range" in one's playing/ musical expression. Take two bassists: one with 4 strings (most of the time) and the other, with 12 strings. I'm refering to Michael Manring & Yves Carbonne. Both are amazing players who paint with their sound. It's safe to say that both of those cats are "extended range" in their playing. "Extended range" could be refered to as extended thinking.....extended composition.....something like that.
