I DARE you to play the 24th fret of the 12th string. I'll give you $100. You can't do it. It's impossible. :D

I play drop C. Personally, I think that's extended enough. 12 stings is cool to, if you wanna couple more notes. :D:D:D

I've always considered a 5 string an ERB. People always say:
"why does your bass have 5 strings?"
"Jaco only needed 4"
"What so special about a 5 string?"
"I don't understand why you need to go that low."
"If you can't groove on a 4 string, you shouldn't play bass."
"There have been plenty of good basslines that only needed 4 strings."

These are usually guitar players saying these things.

I'm not usually one to like a 7+ string bass, but if you can play it, all power to you! I will bash no one for there choice of strings.

What's funny is, when I bought my first bass it was a 5 string, and my guitar player/friend at the time constantly told me a 5 string was pointless. 2 years ago however, he got a gig playing bass in a church and called me wanting to know if I had a spair bass to lone/sell. All I had was a six string I was wanting to get rid of. He traded me out of it and now swears by a six string...go figure!

I wish people would just learn to shut up about this subject. If you show up to a gig with a 20 string monster and you get the job done then THAT is all that matters.

Doesn't Tony Levin sometimes use a 3 and 2 string bass?

Just play music folks. Check the egos at the door please.

:)

you know, on occasion throughout the history of talkbass, we get younger folks coming on posting their "expertise" ending up looking foolish in the process.

here's a tip, offered free of charge. the majority of the folks in this thread have been playing bass longer than you've been alive. many of them have been playing erb's longer than you've been alive.

you're not going to offer -anything- to the folks in this thread of any worth when you cop that kind of attitude.

if you're really interested in contributing to this conversation, and more importantly, learning from it, then folks there are a lot of folks who can offer insights into how you can play instruments like the one pictured.

I do have a question for those who play these multi-stringed basses: How do you keep the other strings from vibrating?

muting, either with the side of the plucking hand on the lower strings or the fretting hand on the higher ones.

cleaning up technique also minimizes extraneous noise, i've found. back in 93 when i moved to 7 from 4 i realized i had a lot of floppy flailing going on with both hands that might have worked ok on a 4 but was obvious and untennable on a 7.

I was wanting to see if I could join. I have wanted a six for a very long time and I finally got one although not an expensive one (I am fairly impressed with it for the price paid). I am really enjoying this bass and I am thinking that I might be spending more time with the six string than my fours foir a while.

yeah, i saw that in your other thread. right on, can't wait to see pics :hyper:

The OCD guy in me is twitching at the non-uniform bridge unit placements.

Nice basses, otherwise, though. The 4th 12 stringer out there?

muting, either with the side of the plucking hand on the lower strings or the fretting hand on the higher ones.

That's how i do it as well. Although sometimes my muting technique involves using my ring and last fingers on my right hand to mute strings. It's bad technique.

milkman-27 #092

The Brice HXB's are a good way to get your feet wet in the 6 string world. That's definitely a bass that can be brought to a gig, very dependable ..... Welcome! :D
