Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

I've always considered a 5 string an ERB. People always say:
"why does your bass have 5 strings?"
"Jaco only needed 4"
"What so special about a 5 string?"
"I don't understand why you need to go that low."
"If you can't groove on a 4 string, you shouldn't play bass."
"There have been plenty of good basslines that only needed 4 strings."

These are usually guitar players saying these things.

I'm not usually one to like a 7+ string bass, but if you can play it, all power to you! I will bash no one for there choice of strings.

What's funny is, when I bought my first bass it was a 5 string, and my guitar player/friend at the time constantly told me a 5 string was pointless. 2 years ago however, he got a gig playing bass in a church and called me wanting to know if I had a spair bass to lone/sell. All I had was a six string I was wanting to get rid of. He traded me out of it and now swears by a six string...go figure!

I completely agree with you . I think for me personally, 5 is the outer limit .

Sorry I'm gate-crashing the ERB club but thats just my personal opinion . If you can play 8 or 9 string basses and kill it , then thats insane !!!

Cheers Guys !!

Here is a pic of me holding my Surine sub contra bass C# F# B E). Not to be confused with what some refer to extended range basses as.

Really nice bass, and wow that C# string looks massive lol!

If you don't mind me asking, in what kind of situations do you sport this beast? For me, as a simpleton that still uses Fender Ps and rarely ever goes below the low B, it's kind of hard for me to imagine how something this low even sounds...

Finding the right amplification for this must be a bitch, or am I mistaken?

Really nice bass

Thank you.

If you don't mind me asking, in what kind of situations do you sport this beast?

I use it in pretty much any genre you can imagine(seriously). It really does fit, its just how it's applied. Never want to over do it.

Finding the right amplification for this must be a bitch, or am I mistaken?

As far as amplification I prefer at least 500 watts and at least one 410 cab.

How do you find strings for that kind of bass?

It's a custom set and the C# string is based off of my onw concept.

The first string company that made the C# for me was Dean Markley. In the pic where I'm sitting with the bass, was taken at the Deam Markley company. After DM stopped making it I then went to SIT to make the new version and that's where I've been ever since.

Click the link and you will see the gauges that I use.

And here is a micro explanation on my Sub contra bass guitar and low C# string concept.

I'm a SIT string endorser.

Actually, Cliff was originally planning on using JP's designs and building that style of bass after JP stopped building, but apparently nobody was too serious about ordering one.

BTW, here is my newest CB for the ERB club!

What kind of wood are those pickup covers made of?? They look KILLER!

The OCD guy in me is twitching at the non-uniform bridge unit placements.

Nice basses, otherwise, though. The 4th 12 stringer out there?

That's how i do it as well. Although sometimes my muting technique involves using my ring and last fingers on my right hand to mute strings. It's bad technique.

This is the first 12 headless:

The string spacing is not regular for this beast. It is 16.5mm, SIDE to SIDE... it means that the low string bridges have more distance between (because the strings are so big!).

Mark Roberts' Prat 10 have the same string spacing idea:

Can I have a number please, for this awesome club?
Just picked up my one of these, the BT406: Link Removed

While on the topic, Has anyone else here had any experience (good or bad) with these guys (custom guitar workshop)?
I have not heard of them before, so took a chance on this one, found at a pawn shop here in melbourne AU for $650.
So far feels and plays ok, think new strings and quick set-up will be all it needs
Thanks
