Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

Not only is the SubContra bass unique, it also looks really beautiful :)

Thank you. And the bass really is a well crafted instrument.

Just a little question: how do you get the C# string to produce sound? C#0 is 17.32 Hz. This is below the lower frequency limit of human hearing (20 Hz AFAIK).

That really isn't hard as a lot of people think. The woods that I chose for the body, neck and fingerboards all helped. As well as the electronics. I asked Bil Bartolini to put a strong emphasis on the clarity of the open 17.32 C# string and the proper pre to balance things out. But Bill already knew what to do for the most part but when I mentioned 17 hz his ears perked up. And he nailed it. And 20hz may be the cut off point for some humans but not all.

Remember when so many players and listeners would complain about not being able to hear the now standard low B string?

If more people were using or listening to a C# string it would be easier to hear as time goes by.

And really with today's technology it was a breeze being able to dial the lower frequencies in.

That's so kind of you to have pointed those facts out. I actually read the relevant points on those old low C# string threads. I liked John Turner's explanation on one of those threads where he talked about how harmonics produced by a vibrating string are integral to the sound produced and that not all humans have a lower hearing threshold of merely 20 Hz (as you mention here).

Another thing, though: can you use any effects on this bass? ;) I mean are there any effects than can be used to affect such low frequencies?

I figured those would be major points establishing the fact that a C#0 string actually works.

John is correct. Before I introduced the low C# string to the public. There was no C# bass string(or guitar string) in existence. The reason I'm mentioning this is because I remember when I first was doing my research in the early 80's into this idea/concept, so many bass players would laugh at me but now those same bass players are believers :)

Octave pedals don't really do it no justice but there is a pedal called the Mini Ark by Snazzy Fx that I will be checking out that might be able to deliver some interesting sounds in the super low frequency range.

The Moogerfooger Bass Murf and midi Murf can get you close.

Very nice (tone, looks and playing :D)! That's a pretty big bass, which is cool for me to see .... I'm a big guy, too, and I get very uncomfortable playing smaller bodied basses :)

You planning on using this in a gigging situation? I'd love to hear it with a full band .....

Yes sir, she weighs about 18 lbs. I found a great 3.5'', padded leather bass strap that holds her up very comfy. "Big toys for big boys". hehheh.

This is the only bass I own now. I recently moved from Los Angeles to Ohio, and haven't yet located any serious musicians to jam with. :atoz:

I tell you though, the electronics on this thing are so wild, that I bet I could cut right through a jack hammers noise at full blast, without being louder than one. :D

To be honest, the bass's shipping weight (packaging and all, with the bass inside of a mono gig bag) reads 23 lbs. The packaging was nothing but those air pillow package filler things, The cardboard box itself is thin and very light. Approx 3 lbs on the box, and the gig bag couldnt be any more than 2-3 lbs. The bass does feel tons heavier than my old Conk GT-7.

Cool thing is that its so fun to play, and coupling the bass with a huge 3.5" padded leather strap, I honestly forget all about the basses weight problem, she just flows. :bassist:

Is an Ibanez SR506 2010 edition good enough to join the extended range club?
Nothing fancy, just simple understated bass awesomeness. Also, mine is tuned EADGCF (although I will drop it down to EADGBE depending on the music I'm playing). Never had much use for the low B.

Sounds killer with an EHX Metal Muff. Great at metal shredding. Anyway, enough talk, heres teh nudes:
