Facebook

And at least from what I've read about it I'm not a big fan of the way they deal with privacy.

What privacy though... Oh noooo, some random person will know that i am happy 49ers won! I am so scared!

It's just like any other internets super highways, don't click on links when you do not know what they are. If someone posts "Invalid Link Removed" DON'T DO IT!

I started a Facebook account a few years ago but never really use it...

Funny thing is I started out as the worlds only Facebook hermit, with no friends. I've never sent anyone a friends request, but somehow people found me and now I've got around 60!!!

Just goes to show that if you sit in one place long enough without doing anything, sooner or later the whole world will pass by.Mind you, my wife started a FB account about 6 months after me, so I suppose I would've been in big trouble if I'd ignored her friends request :-)

Now don't get me started on Twitter....I've never used it but I already know that I loathe it from all the mindless tweets that find their way onto other news sites...The BBC seems to have gone mad on it...even the news readers on Radio 4 give out their Twitter name at the end of broadcasts...harrrummmppphhh

Don't like it, don't use it.

Problem solved, no?

+1

I wonder why complain about it so much? It's free, the point of it is not to please us, it's to sell advertisements, info for marketing etc etc (at least that's my take on it), and yet we complain when they make it easier to do what it's designed to do..? For anyone who really hates it, just don't use it..
If you have friends on there that you have not heard from in years, or something of the sort - get their email addresses, phone #'s and stay in touch with them that way

Just the name alone - Facebook - is creepy.

I've always preferred the name "faceBRICK".
I like facebook for two reasons - 1) it allows me to network my band/musical projects better, 2) it allows me to talk to fellow musicians better.

Other than that, yeah, I couldn't care less about some girl's 6 1/2 hour work shift, or how much she hates her essays, or somebody posting the lyrics to their favourite top-40 pop song that I've never heard, or somebody whining about their ex on facebook. Just screw all that, I just ignore it and we get along fine.

I'd say the level of discourse in my Facebook feed is at a much higher level than here in OT. This place is basically Facebook Light with a bunch of folks I've never actually met. If I want silly and mostly pointless I come here, if I'm wanting thoughtful discussion and media that is relevant to my actual interests FB wins out every time.

Based on the complaints I see here, pretty sure most of them can be chalked up to "user error."

Thats great that youve got such intellectual friends that you discourse with over the bright glow of your computer monitor. I prefer my thoughtful discussion face to face, preferably over some tasty draft beer.
Must be lonely up on that high horse computer chair of yours! :p

Im only kidding, of course. I have no problems with other people using facebook. It just isnt for me, being such an asocialite :smug: The few people I do wish to remain in contact with, I am via mobile phone.

I have a Facebook account and as far as the level of discourse goes, I don't expect much. Most of it can be as low as it can go and be full of links. It is my choice to read and it's my choice to click on the links.

I'll use Facebook to keep up with old friends I don't see that much. Bands too. Some of my older neighborhood friends have had a reunion because of Facebook. It's more social than anything.

Thanks for this. Made me laugh.

If you guys like Facebook, that's cool. A lot of people have stated similar issues they had with the site. I just happen to agree with. Not my thing.

I know you're kidding around, but you're still sort of missing the point. Talkbass IS a social networking site, it's just an older format. Posting on a forum about how you don't use social networking sites is like calling someone on your Motorola Razr to inform them you don't ever use a cellphone. It's even MORE ridiculous when someone states that Facebook is full of pointless updates from a forum filled with threads where the point is to converse in 3 word blips, post "funny pics," or discuss your favorite "junk food." Especially when facebook is made up solely of people that YOU as the user choose.

So pick interesting people, pages, and groups to friend/subscribe to and your facebook will be full of interesting things. If someone doesn't want to utilize Facebook, I could care less, but don't say that facebook is full of "stupid updates" or people saying "I just took a poop" because facebook is full of whatever YOU choose for it to be full of... having a facebook stream full of updates you don't want to read is sort of the internet equivalent of punching yourself in the face for no reason. Furthermore, going on other social networking sites and COMPLAINING that "facebook is full of pointless status updates" is like walking into a bar and complaining to the patrons there that you hate the bar down the street because every time you go there you punch yourself in the face.

I don't go on Facebook often. Plain and simple. If people constantly did this over and over and complained about it, yes, I would say that you are right. I know people like this. I just don't do that though, because I've been through it. I don't want to fine tweak the site for my tastes either, as I've done that before, including updates from who, what, when and why. I find it easier just to leave it be for the most part. I certainly have a right to express my opinion somewhere else on it.

Furthermore, there is a huge difference between the specific community of Talkbass and Facebook's rather generic nature. Techincally, yes, they are both social networking - but they have very different purposes behind them. Talkbass is closely monitored, and the purpose (as an admin once said on some troll thread I read) is mainly to "talk bass". Facebook itself has also drastically changed from the college "find a classmate" site it started out as (anyone remember when you needed a school email address to join?) to this whole other beast. Your analogy of punching ourselves in the face doesn't really make any sense, as not "all social networking sites" are alike. In Matticus's case, I thought we were talking simply about Facebook.

I find Talkbass 100x more interesting anyway. :)
