I learn a song note for note, commit it to memory, play it over and over again and shelf it. I'll forget, of course, but if I look over the tabs or sheet music, I got it back in no time. Songs I have forever stored in my memory banks? I'd say around 40-50.

imo this problem takes care of itself
the lines that deserve to get added to your repertoire stick to your brain much easier.
e.g. all that old james brown stuff is just brilliant, plus most of the songs have only two sections that loop
lines that don't grab you won't grab general audiences, either - better to get into the spirit of the song and play from your heart than to play a rote performance that may leave your mind wandering off

Hundreds of tunes. It's an never ending process especially if you want to play
professionally.
If you start forgetting some tunes/parts write them down. It is always a good thing to have a book. I have done it with most bands I play with.
